Saw a Ducati 899 today on the road

I still don't see the point of the 899 being easier to ride than the 1199 if you want less power ride on wet mode... And aren't the bikes identical in all aspects except the butt ugly dssa and the smaller engine? I dunno, I guess it's just for people who think 1199 is a scary number

Cheaper. Im glad I got the 1199 but to be honest if the 899 had come first, I would have bought it instead.

Ducati are giving out free Termis in the UK to boost 899 sales but after speaking to several sales reps people who already have an 1199 might not like it - the reason being the same as the 1199 when it came out, it lacked mid-range compared to the 1198 line of models. The 848 had a similar characterstic to the 1198 with lots of mid-range but the 899 lacks all that similar to the 1199 when it came out and everything is on the top.

He said it feels like the 1199 in Wet Mode with everything packed up on top. I was told that he prefers the 848 instead because it has a useable mid-range and nothing mental like the 1198.

One thing I would do for sure is to order an 899 seat, its really nice and soft and has that grippy fabric on it as well.

The sales rep who I was talking to also races bikes also said that it can be a good track bike, people will enjoiy it more because the power is a lot more useable and everything is up top like an R6, not sure how it is for 'the street' when there is not much mid-range.

I cannot see where he is coming from, I didn't find any lack of mid range and it's miles better than an 848 in all aspects

I guess you are correct, its just his opinion and he prefers the 848 more.

I will test ride it this week and see what the 899 is all about.

That is an interesting observation because most of the US reviews I've read on the 848 Evo opined that the 848 Evo was more like a 600cc 4-cylinder supersport, with a top-end weighted powerband, unlike the mid-range rich V-Twin powerband Ducati twins of earlier generations.

Looking forward to your ride review and hope you have good weather for the demo.

This one caught my eye. Are you saying the stock seat on the 899 isn't the same stocker on the 1199?

Different foam used internally? Is the ride height the same as the 1199 stocker?

Yes, the 899 seat is of a similar height to the stock Panigale seat, however it uses a different foam and has the R grip fabric. It is really soft and you can easily press it. Also, the region of the 899 seat close to the tank is slightly wider compared to the stock Panigale seat making things a lot more comfortable for the crown jewels!

Here is a performance comparison between 848Evo and 899.

Thanks. I can see how the 899 makes even more power up top and at a higher redline, so in back-to-back comparison the 899 might seem even more peaky. I'm disappointed that they couldn't get any more revs out the 899. Smaller bore and same massively oversquare dimensions make it seem that it would go to 12,500 or something. Not an engineer though, obviously.

Reason for that is that they didn't want to. No doubt they could've hit a higher number; heck, if they just achieved the specific output improvement the 1199 did over the 1198, then you'd be looking at a 160hp motor. But it would be even peakier than the 1199, and that would be contrary to the 899's positioning as a more accessible and friendly bike for the street, as well as being more likely to cannibalize 1199 sales to a degree. And seeing what they're doing with the two versions of the upcoming water-cooled, 4V Monster (10 more HP for the S than the base), my guess is when they get around to doing an S or EVO version of the 899 (and we know they will, whatever they call it), then you'll find that 10-12HP you're missing.

I'm looking forward to taking a spin on one, if only to see what choice I'd have made if it had been available at the same time as the 1199. My practical side would have been sorely tempted. Good thing it wasn't around! ;)

899 on the road

Yes I know it sounds a bit crazy but I could not believe my eyes when I saw one on the road today on my way back from work, it was a white one with red rims.

Not as loud as the stock 1199 but how on earth did that guy got hold of one?

My missus has her 899 had it for almost a week now white with red rims
