So I have to ask because I can't find an answer anywhere but if one were to buy a helmet from champion helmets or motardinn or even eBay and have it shipped to the US, how does that work and what are some fees I have read about that may make it just as expensive as buying within the US? Does the carrier matter?

I had called one store in the UK and asked and they just said I'd have to find out on my own so here I am.

SO many questions!!

Thanks in advance!

It will cost you international shipping plus import duty (which is payable upon delivery in my experience). Returns are expensive if there are any issues. Plus, in the case of a helmet, it will not be DOT approved which may be a problem in certain states.

I buy gear I know will fit me from overseas if the price+shipping+duty makes it worthwhile but not helmets due to the DOT issue. I think you can buy DOT decals if you want it to look legit but it gets to a point where paying a few extra bucks for the real thing isn't that big a deal.

I just bought another helmet from FC Moto in Germany and had it shipped to Canada and there were no import fees or taxes. This is the second helmet I bought from them and the first one had $80 in fees and taxes when it arrived.
I have shipped a lot of items to the US and seldom hear about import fees from the buyers. I don't think the US is a sticky as Canada but I may be wrong.
Still cheaper to ship from Europe to Canada than the US to Canada.
About half the shipping for a helmet. The same lid I bought would have cost me at least $100 more if I bought it and had it shipped from the USA.

I always thought things in USA were cheaper than in England! In fact I bought a Tumi/Ducati laptop bag in the States got it shipped to my friend Ray in NH then he sent it on jn birthday paper!
I will ring my local Yamaga dealer and check for you here in the UK tomorrow

A few helmets available across the pond are not due to arrive here for some time so I thought it might be a good idea to order and ship to the US from Spain, Germany, UK... But it seems some get slammed on customs fees and others not so much.

Just trying to find out if there is any rhyme or reason?!

Appreciated!

Ok spoke to my local dealer, the shipping to USA is huge! You may get stung on import taxes which is nothing to do with Uk it's USA charging.
Aside from all that the dealer says helmets eg Arai are different shape slightly for UK market. Our heads must be different!!!
Would be a shame to buy a helmet and it not fit!!
Patience my child, patience!
Good luck
