...besides i dont want to start from 0 miles. the dash is electronic they really cant set it to what you had?

Yeah, I don't really understand this. It's friggin electronic! I'm sure the dial can be set, or should be set by the licensed mechanic. We are in the future, not the old analog days of the past.

i saw something somewhere that newer replacement instrument clusters were able to have the odo set as needed....i do not know much about it though

-- the water in the dash is common.....ducs like water so you should be fine :)

They replaced my dash during the annual service (2012 model) due to fogging etc. Miles could not be reset but they register all the details in the bikes log book.

That's hard to believe. My Fiat had the cluster replaced very early on (1,000 or so miles IF that) for the analog speedometer working 10% of the time and they had to keep my car at the dealer while the manufacturer of the gauge (in Mexico) MADE my cluster and input the correct mileage on it.

Don't know why Ducati couldn't do something similar

You really wouldn't want that.

Any electronic system open enough for the local mechanic to be able to alter mileage on the odo is a system that's going to be easily hacked/abused by anyone with computer and the desire to hide mileage on his Duc.

I see where you are going. But it can work the same way if the mechanic logs it with less mileage. Whether its in the paperwork or on the display, either way it can be manipulated. Automotive mechanics should just be held accountable like aviation mechanics. Sign or complete wrong maintenance...get fired. Pretty simple really, you take an oath to be a mechanic. I'm proud to say I'm a licensed aircraft mechanic.

I believe that as aircraft mechanic you have a huge responsibility and a lot life depend on you. but a jiffy lube mechanic or a motorcycle mechanic is different they don't go to jail when the .... up, they just get fire . look what happen to me after I got my rear caliper fix by a Ducati mechanic he forged to put the caliper bold back and 20 min later I'm doing 80 mph and the caliper got loose and hit the valve stem on the rear wheel, my rear tire when flat in like 1 second and I was sliding all over the place. I call the dealer to tell them and they said that the mechanic was wondering why he has 2 extra bold on top of his tool box.

The last one we have done many of those with the pilots. Funny .....

Just to follow this up.
Was at dealers today , they inspected my clocks and the mech reckons the front plastic has swollen and cracked so they are requesting a replacement from Ducati.
My bike is out of warranty so they took a pic to send off and try and get them to agree a changeout as a goodwill gesture.
Will see what comes back from Ducati.

You should be able to get a new dash - mine was similar and it had cracked for no reason. I can only think of it happening when parked under the sun on a hot day. Put a cloth on it next time you are parked outside on a hot and sunny day, that should keep it fine.
