Have not been riding my R1 much at all since the Pani moved into the garage. When I do ride it, it feels top heavy, not as responsive to my steering inputs. I really liked it when I bought it, but the 1199S /ABS just plain kicks it's butt in the above note categories and I cannot convince myself to ride it when the Red Beauty is there waiting as well.

The R1 is a good and really reliable bike, but it does not move my blood at all any more.

So...I thought a more multiple-usage bike might be in order for those times when I want to do some two up riding with the wifey and perhaps some longer treks and general commuting. The Pani hates commuting. It handles it well, but I can feel it chomping at the bit to giddy up and go and it seems so unfair to keep it reined in like that.

On my list of possibilities is with a trade in of the R1 are the following:

Multistrada 1200 S Touring

Triumph Tiger Explorer ABS

BMW R 1200 GS Adventure

Based on your experiences with any of the above bikes, please provide your opinions as indicated.

Thanks.

Rode all three bikes and ended up buying the Multi. Now it depends on what you want. I wanted something that would be comfortable for my wife on tours and still have the power and sportiness for canyon riding or even track days. The Multi is the only one that really met that criteria. BMW probably the best off rode endurance and touring bike, big, heavy and slow. The Tiger is also a great bike more like to multi but not as comfortable and sporty.

1199 is an aggressive bike. It is uncomfortable and you cannot ride it for a long trip.
If I want to buy another bike, it should be comfortable and of course, with good handling.

My choice is k1600gt.
You must think that i am crazy but K1600gt is better in handling than 1199s (outside track).
requires much less steering input. It is unimaginable that such a big bike is so light.
The 6 cylinder engine is so smooth and no vibration. It runs like a electric motor.
It equipped with everything that you can imagine as well.

The built quality of K1600gt is better than all bikes in the world.

I've ridden both the GS and the Tiger 1050 and I chose the Tiger. Mine is a 2008 in the burnt orange color with Triumph's "after market TOR exhaust.

It it quite a bit sportier than the GS, weighs less, handles better and costs less. It two-ups ably and comfortably without much loss in either handling or get-up-and-go.

I commute nearly daily on the Tiger and have taken it through some twisties I take the Monster and now the Panigale and it handles them well. Actually the Tiger feels like I can get a lot more lean out of it since it is taller.

And, Triumph's repair ratio is actually lower than BMW's.

I took a Tiger 800 home for a couple of days and found it kind of "buzzy" but still a very capable bike.

If it matters, I'm getting between 44 and 54 MPG on the Tiger.

Unless you plan on going off road go with the Multi, great all around bike. Not as good as the GS when it comes to off roading IMHO.

I've got to say for serious touring, at least in the US, you can't really beat the japanese. Yamaha coming out with an fjr 1400, the kawi concours is getting a makeover too.

The beauty of the japanese bikes besides reliability, you'll always be pretty close to a dealer, not the case with duc, bmw or triumph. I also think a shaft drive is way to go on touring bike.
Just IMHO

FYI, I;ve got a goldwing I do long trips on.

Try the BMW K1300S.

I think the speed triple R... Different engine type for variety..still got all the top end parts such as ohlins etc

Out of the 3 bikes above I d go 1200 GSA it'd unbelievably flick able for the size and eats the miles, I ve seen it embarrass sports bike when it gets twisty.

The Multistrada IMHO.

It'll give you great touring and comfort for you and a passenger, but being used to a Pani, it'll still give you a thrill when you pin it which i don't think the other will.

I've seen guys on the Multi do 250Km/155 mile per hour and outride sports bikes. Wonderfully stable.

Granted not the best offroad bike but does have a reasonable capability.

Best of all, it's a Ducati ;-)

Ive never owned a R1, but have ridden many other inline fours. I have also ridden other Vtwins...01 Mille R, 05 999. The part where you said that the R1 doesnt get your blood going is the way I felt about my 05 1000rr that I came off of to get the 1199. Yes my 1000rr handled better then most because it had magnesium wheels on it, but it didnt inspire me. Something about a inline fours just doesnt get my blood flowing anymore. I guess it feels vanilia and soulless. Something about being on a Ducati and a Vtwin makes riding worth riding. Maybe your feeling the same way as I did.

I have the solution for you!

Well the solution arrived yesterday.:D

Just to add to the mix what about a KTM 990?? Good fun to ride and in the right hands a very capable bike. Just diversifying the slate a bit!!

Having changed the rear shock to a Nitron and front springs to progressives, my FJR1300 is great, both solo and 2 up. Don't knock it until you try it!

It also has a fantastic support network!

However, the Multistrada may be its replacement!
