I know that if a thief wants a bike, they will get it but what do you plan on using to secure your bike or to deter thieves when you aren't around it? With my past bikes, I would avoid riding if I were going to be indoors for an extended period of time. ex. going to the movies.

Since you can't kill thieves (which would be really great), I mainly use :
- wisdom (not parking everywhere but in safe places, weather in a graded parking with video or in front of a police station)
- solid insurance (can't beat that)
- tracker (a chip that's somewhere inside the bike and allows it to be retrieved; not a GPS one)
- alarm (not only for thieves, since it's mainly for people not riding it while I'm away)
- and maybe a chain and a disc lock, but these solutions are proven to be useless since can be broken literally in seconds (and I speak about the best ones on the market, like Abus)

i have an abus disc lock and also the ground anchor and chain, like braintrash says they wont deter the proffesional thief but they stop the opportunist thief. Other than that im gonna be fully insured and its in a locked garage so they gotta break into that aswell, which just happens to be right outside my front patio doors. cant cover all bases but im as good as i can be.

If they want it they will get it. Insurance is the best. I won't cry over a stolen bike, because I know my policy covers it in full.

True but I'm sure it's a hassle. I've not had to experience replacing a stolen vehicle (knock on wood) so I don't have first hand experience.

LoJack/Tracking device is your best bet at getting it back, but LoJack doesn't come with stickers, so having one isn't a deterrent. (You can order bootleg LoJack stickers on ebay, though.)

I personally have seen too many people stranded by their own alarms - or had their vehicles vandalized because the alarm kept going off at 2am. Add to that the fact thieves don't even care about alarms and, well, there you have it.

Good insurance policy is as good as it gets. If you do regularly park in the same visible area day in/day out, then locking your bike to something immovable is not a bad idea, but like the alarm, it's not going to stop a professional.

Probably the best deterrent is to have a totally stock 1199. Being that aftermarket parts are where the most $$ is, not having them diminishes your bikes worth considerably. If you are going to add bling, might want to make sure it's all laser etched or something that makes the parts traceable.

That's an hassle. Waiting for the money, and then for the new bike, etc, etc, etc.

It's streamlined here. I know Europe is always complicated when it comes to these things so I can understand.

I just don't see the point in spending lots of extra money when the reality is they can get it anyway. No matter how many locks chains or alarms you have, it takes an experienced thief 20-30 seconds to lift a bike. YouTube it if you don't believe me.

YouTube it if you don't believe me.

Not that I didn't believe you but I check it based on my curiosity. Damn they work quick. I watched one where the guys put a GSXR750 in the back of a mini SUV. Seems a lot of these are from bikes in parking garages or parked outside their residence.

Also watch ones where they cut a big ass chain lock in 5 seconds.

Yep, police everywhere and justice nowhere.

We can't do anything proper since thieves are almost never "in danger". Police usually waits for them to be gone, so that they are sure they avoid trouble and all. But as for spying tickets and all, be sure they are there.

The real solution would be to allow us to protect our bikes (if I hurt a thief, I am the one going in jail...) and to have a proper police.

rlink alarm by Scorpio,ABUS disc lock plus Ducati comes with a security system that disable
the whole bike if keyless and Full Coverage Insurance is a must.

iCam is a pretty cool security application for droids/iPhones. Would do no one any good on the street, but it'd be easy enough to hook up a webcam to watch over your garage. In the event that someone broke in during the night/day you'd receive a text message with their pictures. And at any time you could always log into the application if you just wanted to stare at what your bike was doing while you were away. :)

I was thinking of getting an Almax chain from England. They are a bit pricey and heavy. If you don't mind carrying it in your backpack every where you go, it's well worth it. I watched their demo videos and it is very convincing.

I learned never to put the chain on the ground as it gives the thieves leverage to break the chain. At home my bike is under cover with a disc lock and in a locked fenced in yard with very watchful neighbors.
