SFV4S Brake Bleed

So why does the fluid in the rear brake reservoir turn dark so quickly? Is it the heat?

On my 1199 I just swapped the fluid to a higher heat Motul one...RBF 660 if I remember right. The Motul never changed colors on me.

It may have been Motul 5.1, I cant remember which one I used. DOT 5.1 normally has a higher boiling point, but the Motul 660 is listed as 594 F but it a DOT 4. I'm guessing since its synthetic or made with unicorn tears it has a higher boiling point.

660 is best DOT 5.1 is still a step below. I gave 5.1 a shot and it was still toast after like 1,000 miles. Same with 660 tho, renew every thousand miles. Probably more of a mental thing for me

Haven’t touched the fluid in the rear in 18 months. Looks brand new and I ride a few hundred miles a week. Never had any fluid discoloration brake or clutch. Motul 600/660

To be fair though, you are on a Pani. Hot air is being pushed back through the fairings, over the engine and directly on the rear res. Not so much of an issue on the SFv4.

I have RBF 660 in both brake systems and the clutch and no color change, that I can tell, in about 1000mi. Ofcourse, the SF rear res is smoked, so hard to tell the color change without opening.

So what’s the rationale for putting on a reservoir sock? Protection from UV? To keep the sloshing liquid from distracting a rider?
