Should I be ready for a warranty fight?

I have a 2020 V4 base thats in the shop right now because I had a weird grinding coming out of first gear. MaverikiB gave me some insight as to what the issue might be, I mentioned it to the dealer, but they said they would still need to tear down the bike to check everything. Dealer also said I might have to pay for fixing since the clutch is a wearable item and warranty is iffy on that. Should I be worried that they wont cover the costs? The bike is covered and has ~5000 miles. Thanks!

If there's premature wear on a part due to improper setup, such as the clutch not getting enough oil, then they should absolutely cover it. I had a rear brake pistol seal start leaking at just 3k miles or so, Ducati replaced the entire caliper, pads, and rotor on warranty. It wouldn't make sense for them to make me front the money for a rotor or pads because they're technically wear items.

At the absolute worst, you should pay for no more than the clutch plates. Labor and whatnot should absolutely be covered by warranty. Assuming you didn't adjust the clutch oil nozzle yourself, that's something setup by the factory, and if you paid a setup fee when you purchased the machine, that definitely places responsibility on your dealer.

Thanks man, I hope you're right. Clutch plates are probably really expensive themselves! Are you saying that if I have to pay for the clutch plates, they would cover the labor for it?

I'm not sure. I'm just speaking from how I would feel/act in your situation. Luckily, my dealer was not afraid to make warranty claims so I never had to fight for anything. Based on these forums, it seems a lot of dealers are reluctant to file warranty claims. Not sure how warranty claims are processed as far as money for the work goes, but based on how much dealers resist, it seems there's more money in making the customer pay.

A new set of clutch plates would likely run somewhere between 300-400 dollars. That's at least how much aftermarket stuff runs, so maybe Ducati tax makes them run more OEM. However, I would fight tooth and nail for that claim. Either the factory or the dealership ...... up the setup on your bike and made the clutch run too dry, if there's any premature wear (plates needing to be changed well before the recommended clutch service interval) then Ducati is liable 100 percent. If they installed your brakes wrong and your pads/rotors were spent after a thousand miles, they'd be out of their damn minds trying to make you pay for their mistake. This is no different.

Yeah, they probably lose out on some money when doing warranty work. Those are some great points to bring up if they try to deny warranty.

Contact Ducati North America and plead your case. DNA may be able to help.
Question, did Ducati North America actually respond to you? I never heard anything in response when I first started complaining about the oil coolers on the 2018 V4s. I filed a claim with the NHTSA. I'd like to think I was instrumental in getting that recall published after two owners posted up complete failures of the line fittings into the coolers.
Hate to say, it but clutch plates are normal wear items you'll be fighting an uphill battle. Per the Ducati warranty from my 2018 V4 manual it states "Normal wear and deterioration caused by the use of the motorcycle on expendable maintenance items including, but not limited to: L) Clutch plates".

Yes. DNA gave me a one-time courtesy coverage of a wear and tear item. DNA responded to my email immediately.

If I have to plead, then I'll contact DNA then. To be fair though I don't think clutch plates will wear out after 5000 miles after normal use. At least that hasn't happened on any of my previous bikes with over 20k miles. Fingers crossed I won't have to fight anyhting!

My issue was similar and I just stated the facts: The item should last 40-50k. Mine lasted 5k. My bike is under warranty. Etc. DNA was awesome. DNA contacted the dealer and it was covered. Overall, it was a pretty easy process.

So bikes still in the shop, on thursday it will be 3 weeks now. Apparently the speed sensor went out, threw a check engine light and also the clutch basket needed to be replaced and some other bits. They're waiting for the parts to come in and should be in town on Friday, I'm worried now because I have a track event coming up on Sunday and I doubt I'll be able to cancel it if the bike is not finished. Has anyone else had long dealer wait times like this?? Thanks in advance!

Yeah... my zx10 was in the shop twice for 3 weeks. Mainly just waiting on parts. Once was for a stator another for a clutch.

I needed a few bolts earlier this year and I was told that the wait time was 6-8 weeks. COVID-19 is wrecking havoc

So after weeks of going back and forth with the dealer, my bike is still in the shop! It has now been 31 calendar days. I got a call from the dealer today saying that they are finally working on it when the parts arrived on Tuesday. They then told me that now the side stand switch is broken. I contacted DNA and awaiting to hear back. Looks like I can now file a lemon law claim since its been over a month.

you might ask for an extended warranty period due to the fact you’re not able to use the bike - it may prove worth the effort

Pursuit of lemon law will be a difficult process and probably not worth your aggravation

well ill hope for the best and try to get that or them to pay for my monthly bill lol

Hi Gil,
Need your advice on your warranty claim for your clutch plates. I faced a similar problem where my first gear on my V4s panigale keeps slipping when the gear lever is being released. It only happened at the 1st gear. My local dealer told that I have to replace the whole clutch plates. I just clocked only 15k km on my panigale. Could you share your experience on this matter? My warranty period is still valid.
