sound tuning with stock exhaust

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

The first time I rode with either the MWR or Sprint I felt that there was more intake noise, which I could only hear if I rode w/o ear plugs.

I didn't notice any difference from on the exhaust side of things. That being said, I would never tune for noise. I would only tune for better drive-ability and power.

OK Those of you who want to mock me look at these

Enjoy your loud pipes while you can.

I said it before I like a good sounding bike myself. however the Ducati 1299 is at the very legal limit now..That is why they have the exhaust valve from the factory. It is to keep the bike quiet enough to pass CURRENT noise levels at slower speeds when they test them for the DOT and EPA requirements..
Ducati is already at or close to the limit of their technology to keep the big 1285 cc twin quiet enough to sell here in the USA.

I think the Harley guys are the ones that do the worst however we are all n this together. ALL motorcyclist are included in the new laws..
It is just a matter of time before they change them to even more stringent laws and you will not even be able to get your current bike inspected if you don't have the stock CARB regulations sticker on the bikes exhaust can.

The government is full of left wing idiots that will come up with new laws just to substantiate the need for their jobs..

Don't listen to an old guy like me What do I Know right?

I'm done with this..I am just wasting my time...

Inspection? Whats thats?:)

I don't think many riders care about some stupid exhaust law. I live in commufornia where there's laws for everything in the book and probably some crap we don't know about either. While the panigale exhaust sounds decent at lower revs, it sounds like .... in the mid to upper rpm range. Sound is the ONLY reason I spent my cash on an Akrapovic. Don't care about the weight savings and certainly don't care about the performance increase. It's not austin racing obnoxious. It is perfect. This is how the bike should have been delivered. It already exceeds sound decibel limits from the factory so one can't argue that point and it also won't cut it at some tracks either, even in stock form, therefore do what you want. Most cops don't really give a .... about an exhaust. If they did, every last harley on the road would get taken off the streets. Passing some law isn't going to change anything really, unless they make the fine ridiculous like impounding your bike or some other nonsense. As long as there's an aftermarket, there will always be customers. I will definitely continue to be one of them.

I think this is the link you should have posted.

State-by-state motorcycle laws

I don't care about CARB. Why? Because I don't live in California. Neither do you according to your profile. So why are you even bringing it up?

Noise law for my state...

Maximum Sound Level
No acoustical criteria.

Did you hear the gov't orchestrated 9/11 too? AND they have MARStians in captivity? AND Flight 59 from the Bermuda Triangle is actually on Saturn inventing new cocktails? LOL, JK man. Relax. I bought a Ducati because I work too hard to not have fun and show the world there's people who choose style and lifestyle (Italy) over frugality every once in while :) I also run around SD with my cutouts wide ... open on my 1969 Chevelle SS396 to remind people not how we (Americans) used to be. Btw, I also have a 2014 Chevy Volt which is plugged in right now and saving the planet because I have solar panels who provide energy off of coal-powered plants and I recycle in every way I can.

Have a Moscow Muel too :):D

Where in TX ya at? I grew up there!!

Very funny comeback...LOL

So you are "saving the planet" Huh Now THAT is funny to me.. :p

Let me ask you a question...How is buying a battery powered car saving the planet ? LOL Do you know how many extra toxic chemicals are emitted just to produce an electric car? Not to mention many other toxic processes in the manufacturing process) it takes to make the Litium batterys (itself a very toxic chemical) that power the electric car? Do you realize that when the batteries finally have to be replaced they have to be stored somewhere? Thus adding to the problem even more so in the future? Not to mention the absolutely ridiculous price they will charge you to replace those batteries when they finally go bad.:D All this so you can "feel good about yourself" over here in the states to "save the planet" LMAO

I see that you stated that you recycle.. I'm sure that give you a nice warm fuzzy feeling ...:D

Well.. It takes MORE fuel and energy to find, collect, separate and transport a plastic bottle to a recycling station than it actually cost to produce a new on ..And then of course when it arrives at the recycling station even more energy (produced by fossil fuels or coal) then to melt it down to 'recycle" that plastic bottle.
It is cheaper (and uses LESS energy in the long run) to simply make another plastic bottle. You have been brainwashed by the government and popular TV media machine and all the governments "special studies" (like most Americans have) into thinking that we need the government to get involved in virtually every aspect of our lives and control us (and of course tax us more to pay for all this also)
BTW You just made my point when you stated that you run your 1969 Chevelle with wide open pipes to remind people of how it USED TO BE!
I too remember those days with fond memories when I was young... ( I had two 1969 Camaro's a 69' 350ci/300 hp SS model and a 1969 302 ci Z/28) Both had pretty loud pipes and did attract a lot of attention! It was fun to terrorize the neighborhood.. but that was a long time ago and we did not have the FEDERAL government breathing down our back like we do now.

It used to be that the government was NOT involved to the point they are now.. maybe you had a local city ordinance against loud pipes but you did NOT HAVE the federal government restricting you right? Well things are changing my friend and YOU need to wake up ! Some states already have regulations regarding changing their exhausts. I Know California does and I believe Colorado does already...

I know this all started out about loud pipes. AND I DID get off subject and joked a little about those that want to sound loud and attract attention to themselves LOL.... Lets face it, most of us did when we were young..I did..
However nowadays REAL laws are being presented in congress that WILL take away your rights to have any thing other that the factory CARB /government regulation exhausts.. They have already forced us to accept gasoline with 10% ethanol in it.. Just a few years back we would have never thought we would be told that we have to buy cheaper fuel (with basically corn derived alcohol) .Great for corn farmers and their lobbyist though LOL Always follow the money trail if you want to see the real reasons for all these regulations...
This has created many problems with boat owners with fiberglass tanks etc.. They now are fighting up in Washington for 15% fuel mandates..!!!
Put that in you bike and see how long it will run at 15% ethanol unless your machine is specially set up for it it will mess up fuel injection pumps and injectors etc. Not even your typical lawn mower or generator will run on that ......

** I expected the response I got..LOL I always like to stir things up to see how peoples attitudes are.. However there are some things to consider for the long term

BTW I live right here in the heart of liberal, nut job, tree hugging hippie freak weirdos.. Good old Austin Texas area.

If you think Austin Texas is liberal, you need to travel more.

Try out the Pacific north-west and report back.

Hey Double O I agree with you to a point..

I installed a Akropovic DP slip on my bike... I did it to get rid of the catalytic converter AND GET THE 1299 up MAP Oto try to solve some low end fueling issues (it didnt work).. From what my 61 year old ears can tell It is about the same decibel level as the stock pipes..It does sound good but not too obnoxious..
Maybe you and some of the others misconstrued my meaning when I am talking about running loud pipes. I think the stock exhaust is OK with most people And to tell you the truth I cannot hear that much difference on the new Akro pipe. I installed mime to try to get my bike running better.

What I am concerned about is our future if those out there that want RIDICULOUSLY loud pipes.. They are the ones that are attracting al the wrong kind of attention.. for instance If a guy leaves for work in the morning at 7;00 am and had really loud/ straight pipes he is pissing off a lot of people on his street. Those people complain and eventually it gets noticed by the right people and that is when the .... rolls UPHILL to those that can pass lows etc.. We all need to try to get along and police ourselves before the Big Brother does it for us. If we don't eventually the laws will change for the worse and believe me.. THEY WILL enforce it.. (especially if it can bring in revenue in the way of fines).. The government LOVES fines..LOL

you are right there is no mandatory (across all states) laws YET.. However it is coming. Just watch in the new couple of years..

Like I said before enjoy your loud bike now while you still can...If no one changes their ways now the government will change it for them ..

Yeah LOL There are lots of whacko's there too... California is basically like a big bowl of granola cereal

It full of Fruits, nuts and flakes..

Are you drunk? You remind of those guys who stand on street corners with badly written signs ranting about Jesus and the apocalypse. Take that .... elsewhere, this thread is (was) about exhausts. ;)

My conversation was also about exhaust and the possible repercussions fpor being just plain stupidly load and obnoxious

By the way who made you the thread sherrif?

What an ignorant comment

Phil told you to go get a snickers a long time ago.. may be what phil doesn't know is that (judging from several of your comments) the version of you typing away ignorant and obtuse comments IS the REAL you

There IS good news however, the process of aging DOES fill all the voids (you seem to be having) in the brain.. so there is hope for you after all

move along...

Obviously you cant tell when someone is joking.. Why don't you go eat a Snickers LOL

There's something to be said for caution on sound levels with pipes (OEM and aftermarket).

I was going to get Phil's treatment done to my stock base pipes. Thought about it for a long time. Finally decided against it. Simply because I value keeping the good will of my neighbors (I tend to get up and ride before dawn on Sundays) over the exhaust sounds I would have.

Make yourself obnoxious long and loud enough and the people around you who don't care about how it sounds will start attempting to do something about it. Not everyone appreciates a Pani at full throttle (nor should they).

Even I applaud some restrictions. I've had too many *painful* encounters with bozos running straight pipes on their cruisers who think it's their world and the rest of us are just living in it.

Run louder pipes if you want. I enjoy aftermarket sound ( I even have some on my new Speed Triple though I haven't removed the DB killers). Just don't be surprised or offended (and absolutely no whining about it!) when you start getting pushback from local citizens/LEOs about it.
