Starting Issues and Fork Oil Leaks - 2014 899 Panigale

I have 2 questions I am hoping someone could help me with.

I just got on my 2014 899 Panigale a couple days ago after not having ridden it in about 2 1/2 or 3 months (either rain or blistering cold each time I was going to go out). I took it off its Abba stand and it fired right up without a problem. I rode to a doctor appointment, much of the way between traffic on surface streets so it was good and hot. I parked at the office and was at the doctor for perhaps an hour. When I got back to it and went to turn it on it took 3 attempts to get it going properly. I had this happen another time or two in the past when turning it back on after having left it off and parked for a little bit of time. I press the starter button and it sputtered to life and sounded real weak. The RPMs never made it up to full idle speed (only 900 maybe) and it died after a couple of seconds. So I did it again and gave it a little gas and that was too much and killed it before it really got going. So I tried a third time and was a bit more careful with the gas and gave it just a little bit and it stayed running and after about 2 or so seconds it was running normally at proper idle speed (I think about 1400 if I am not mistaken). I then pulled out of the parking garage and had to stop at the ticket booth to negotiate the guy who takes the money. I turned it off so I would be able to hear what he was saying. After he told me I did not have to pay for parking I fired it back up (so it was off for only 20 seconds maybe) and pulled out of the structure. This time when I fired it up it was idling fast (at about 2,500 RPM). I eased out into traffic and once I gave it a little throttle to make the turn into a lane and then backed off to wait in a line of cars at a light it was idling just normally. So, I drove back home and stopped at a gas station. I had it off for about 3 minutes or so at the gas station while I topped it off and when I fired it back up it started without a hitch at all and I drove home.

No check engine light came on at any time. I suppose I could check it with JPdiag but I don't know if that will do anything. My guess is that it is just some fluke in the fuel injection computer system not feeding it the correct ratio of fuel properly at first with the engine temp having been what it was when I parked and now being different after sitting for an hour and it takes a bit to even out. Does anyone have any ideas?

The other thing is that I also noticed when I got back there was oil that had come out of my forks. This happened a previous time when I had not ridden it for a bit and there was oil that had run down out of the forks and had left a little coating and some had welled up around the base of the fork tube where the polished silver part connects to the painted back part. The previous time it happened it was just a little. This time it was enough that a couple of drips actually dripped off onto the ground after a few minutes of being parked and the amount of oil on the silver tube of the fork was noticeably more. The previous time this happened I noticed it and then after my next trip out a short while later I found no more oil having leaked. I have not ridden it again yet since just a couple days ago so I don't know what will happen when I take it out again.

Does anyone have any input on this? Are either of these things that I should be concerned about?

Eric

The first issue could be attributed to bad gas, maybe. As ethanol fuel sits in storage it will absorb water. I'm only speculating if that was your issue.

The second is that you fork seals are done. They are easy to replace if you have the tools and time. This is the bigger concern you have.

Okay, thank you. I cracked open my service manual and I am going to invest in the right tools. I do all my own work so I will do this too. If regular Earthlings can do it then I am sure I can figure it out. I got recommended not to ride it until the seals are replaced so that there is no risk of oil getting on the brakes and creating a dangerous situation. So I will do that.

Someone else also recommended the possibility of bad gas. Maybe it went bad in 2 months. I use Shell 91 octane. He suggested using some good fuel cleaner and if that does not go, then changing the fuel filter. It only has 5000 miles on it in 10 year so it does not get a lot of use which probably a big sin on my part.

I don’t know who gave you that advice, but there is no serviceable fuel filter. There is a metal mesh one inside of the fuel pump, but it’s not meant to be changed.

Your injectors may be gummed up and it just now got to the point where it’s causing the bike to run rough. You can remove them and clean them, there are tools and kits for doing so.

Put fuel conditioner (the stuff used to keep water in suspension in E10) and use it for a couple of full tanks. Problem will probably disappear. If you can store it in the winter with gas not E10 it's always better. If not store it with a full tank with conditioner. If you have Ohlin forks get used to changing fork seals. I always insure that whatever fender is on the bike the full front width of the lower leg is covered (why Ducati sells bikes where that is not the case suprises me). Even if the fender needs to be modified to be sure they're completely protected. Clean the fork lower after every ride. Changing the seals is easy once you have the right tools. I use the extension part of dial calipers to check the oil level.

Okay thanks. A doing some research and watching videos and posting my questions on 3 different forums I decided to try the Motion Pro Seal Mate at least and clean them and see if that resolves the problem, just because it is an easier attempt than replacing the seals. If that does not work I will replace the seals.

What fuel stabilizer or conditioner would be recommended? Sorry to sound dense, but there are so many types. Different people have said "do the filter," which I thought meant "change the filter" but bp_SFV4 pointed out that this is not a serviceable filter so I must have misunderstood that. Some people said to use a cleaner in the fuel that will clean the injectors, is that what you are referring to with the conditioner?

I use this stuff called engine med but only because it comes in real small bottles 4 oz that I can toss in the tank bag. Anything intended to keep water in suspension will work. The sock filters and inline filter to the injectors are gone (I know WTF). Replaced by a mesh filter only on the pump intake. This is not intended to be serviceable but is if you're careful. Do a search there's a really good explanation on how to go about this. That motion pro seal mate is intended for dirt bikes. But try it. If the fork sliders aren't cleaned regularly you can get grime and bug guts into the seals in spite of the dust covers.

Do you still have the evap canister? Is the most common cause for starting issues when bike is warm/ hot

Okay, thanks Baggerman. I will check that out.

I do still have the evap canister I am sure. To be honest I am not entirely certain what it is but you're the second person who has mentioned that and I think I need to look into what to do about it.

This the stuff?

Yep that be it. Absorbs water back into the E10. You got to be really careful storing these if the tank dries out with E10 in it it's almost always a mess.
