After watching Silverstone MGP race I was struck by the fact that the 93 was able to make a hail mary move that didn't pan out, run off the track cut the corner and get his spot back without losing any time, and NO PENALTY,WTF?
This fosters sloppy un realistic riding habits, it wasn't that long ago if you ran off like that you would be dead.

Asphalt and rubber has a good explanation on it, especially compared to aleix asparagus who got penalised 1 seconds for similar infraction.
In summary, mm93 took precautions, raised his hand up, slowed down, and rejoined safely without position advantage that any penalty would be somewhat redundant.

Should there not be any penalty for running off the track? Had he run into a gravel trap vs a paved off-section, I'm guessing his result would not have been the same.

OP raises a good point - he attempted a pass that he may have known was not going to work out too well and did it anyway cause... why not? Worst case he goes off and re-joins without risk of penalty (assuming he re-joins in the same position or lower). Curious to see what A&R says about it. Heading there now -

I don't see why this should give a penalty when Rossi could go full throttle over the gravel when attacked at Assen last year...

You're right, he should have had the decency to just wreck after Marquez bumped him off track.

The rule is about whether you gain an advantage or not, but I don't necessarily agree with the rule. Like others have said it encourages hail mary stunts that if they don't pan out have little consequences.

MM made that apex, more so than Rossi does when late braking on several occations.

Sure he made the apex he had practiced that line all weekend. He practiced that line to specifically not allow anyone else room in the corner. His plan was to give his opponent no room so they either slow or run off. What he didn't plan for was Rossi motoring across the chicane and putting the decision in the hands of race direction. A hard (not dirty) move by Marquez but a smart move by Rossi.

You seem to know an awful lot about Marc's plans, does he confide in you on a regular basis?

Ok, I get it. When Rossi goes flat out over the gravel after an aggressive but legal attack by MM he's smart, but when MM takes the escape route without gaining anything after a failed move he should be penalised? That makes NO sense at all...

I just love how this has become a Valentino Rossi thread, without mark putting an oar in.
And how about that old timers qualifying effort this morning?
