V2 or V4

One year ago, I was in the same boat as you. Never owned a Ducati and wanted one. Never owned a sport bike and didn't think I needed the bigger (engine) bike. I am 6'3" and 230lbs.

I bought a 2019 959 Corse last May. I rode it all during the slowness of the pandemic and did a number of track days on it at COTA. I was a first timer then, and just learning. About 4000 miles on it around central Texas, I started to think that the bike felt small. Not engine power. It had plenty and I loved getting through ALL of the gears riding around town and the countryside.

I unfortunately sat on a V4 at the dealer and instantly realized that it "fit" me better. One thing taller people deal with is length of sleeves and pant legs. When we try clothes on we are relieved when we see that sleeve go all the way to the wrist! LOL> The V4 felt like it was the right size.

Then I test rode a v4s. Done. The suspension was what made me buy it. I traded my 959 Corse for the V4s Corse.

You will NOT make the wrong decision. I miss the torque, and full use of the twin engine and transmission. It also sounds better, IMO. The V4S (for me) has a better fit, the suspension is magical, and in Street Mode it gives me the opportunity to use most of the gears.

No right answer to this. You must do what you think is right, of course. (You could always come with me to Alderan).

They are two very different bikes although they share the same genealogy, the reality does not lie in the numbers though. They are meaningless, 150 vs 200 meh... plenty of people LOVE their 916’s and 999’s in fact some people say the 999 was perhaps the finest handling ducati ever. Its about the experience you want, love MotoGP and like the howl of a 4 then get the V4, love the twisties and the easy torquey charisma of the twin get the twin. The twin will be a bit cheaper to buy, to maintain, cheaper on tires (a lot) its a comfortable bike for big people (I’m 6’4” and the 1299 I’d the same size).

In the end there are 2 important things for sports bike buyers these days apart from brand loyalties, accepting the fact that ALL the superbikes are varying degrees of excellent. Those 2 factors are they must 1. Look good and 2. Sound good. end of story. After that you can split hairs on maintenance, engine config etc but anything you buy of the same model level (base vs R or M) will do the business.

I would go for rides back to back, see which one feels right sleep on it and then get the V4, haha!

The best road bike has always been the gixer 750... blend of balance and power. The V2 is the modern day version. I agree test ride both but those that say V4 probably have a ..... length less than 3 inches... this is from someone that went from a 1299s to a V2 for road use. I case u r wondering.. pen is length is 3.1 inches rounded up.

Hatters... bring it on ;-)

I agree with you on this, it seems like people are just about having the fastest and the most expensive. I am 99% sure that non of the people that own v4 use them to the fullest potential. Heck using v2 to the fullest is hard too.

Never owned a 600 or a 750cc street bike

To me those displacements are for dirt bikes

Why buy a 750 when I can get a 1000 in the same chassis?

Would be like ordering a muscle car with a small block

This is why people are suggesting used 1299 over new V2

1200 over 955cc

Note what I stated... for the road. Here in London there is not much difference between a 600cc and a 1200cc except for crippling insurance. It’s all about ease of use for the day to day. But in reality how much better is the V4 vs the V2 for Johnny Normal? Not here to annoy any V4 owners... just saying I went from 1299s to V2 and it’s fine for road use. That’s my experience but I appreciate if u have deeper experiences that mine. Maybe yours is 4 inches vs my rounded up 3.1

Toro, even for track v2 vs v4 wouldn't be much different in one's hands. Pros got 2 seconds difference between the two (v2 and v4). Surely non of them can achieve those speeds either way. I do find people, especially from a specific continent needlessly spending money just because it is the "best" and "more powerful" if compared to anything lower spec than the all-mighty v4. Funnily enough, I find wanting the v2 more just because of it bringing to the table almost everything that anyone could need apart from the pros. Everyone thinking that they actually need 215hp and spending more money on it is just the "I have to have the best" mentality. Not saying that it's not nice having a v4 over v2 but again not sure if the cost is justifiable when it comes to how much of the performance aspect you are going to utilize.

like I said, its about the experience. I love my 1299 and after 30 plus ks I am just getting to grips with it sort of. I would love a V4 and threatened to get one 18 months ago but went for some test rides and while its definitely an upgrade in performance its not an upgrade in how it feels. The twin makes you feel fast even if youre not, its an occasion going out on it, turns heads if thats your thing and steers beautifully. I am sure I would be "faster" on a V4 but what does that even mean to someone who is not a racer? Trackdays are about enjoyment and thats a relative thing, theres guys out there on all sorts of machines with grins from ear to ear, so what if you do 305 on the front straight vs a bit less on the twin? Same for road use, if you use the public road to explore the upper limits of the V4 then I salute you while you are still here and have a license. Top end is overrated, the real fun is in the twisties an even then if you're getting into knee down territory on the upper gears on a public road then you are pushing limits that will eventually bite. The V4 is an insane overkill, but that does not mean it wouldn't make a great bike- most of the people riding have Ducatis because they can afford them and just like the brand, not because they are knee down 300 plus street riders. Its not about performance its about what you like, no one on this board can tell you that. If you were to use romance as an analogy the twin is like a beautiful women who is just as likely to love you or leave you with a broken heart and that intense high maintenance uncertainty is therapist material, the V4 on the other hand is "professional", youll get sex like never before, it will be mind blowing but you also know that its a result of many years of practice before you got there... Tough choice!

Very much so agree with everything you said. In conclusion, either way, you're happy owning YOUR ducati.

V4 cause you will only want it once you buy the v2, that’s how I am, i always want the bigger guy, that’s why I just went for the v4, plus I came from 1000’s and the salesman said I would be back dissatisfied with the v2.
