Weight loss on the Panigale

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

For your spreadsheet. OEM horn bolt = 13.8grams The homemade stainless steel hollowed out by Gecko = 8.2 grams.

:) :)
Actually I replaced most bolts on the bike. But after being called a jerk I stopped posting this "hollowing" activities on the forum :)

The most silly screw I did is the rear brake stopper screw. It doesn't really make the bike lighter more than some gramms, but it's fun and it does not cost anything.

I remember years ago reading an article that stated Soccer was one of the most demanding work outs you could have.

Top Soccer players are superb athletes.

Provided you are actually running the whole time and aren't on the bench or playing with a bunch of fat guys who are walking the entire time.

Pro level, absolutely a strenuous activity. Rec level? Probably not so much.

Please consider posting more of your custom hardware. I admire your machining capabilities.

weight saving mods I went with are Magnesium Wheels (gold), Shorai battery, full exhaust, dp rearsets and I also took off all reflectors and those UGLY mirrors.

I'm 5'11 150lb. and thats heavy for me (muscle weight).. I workout at a crossfit gym 3x a week.

I weighed mine just before the last track day. It weighed in at 410lbs with just over 90% fill on the tank in street trim. The goal is to get it down to under 400lbs in street trim.

I want to add all the rest of the Matte Carbon that is behind the stock plastics (suitcases, radiator support, everything behind the front fairing, etc.). Then I will start on the 520 conversion and Ti hardware. The Mag wheels and finally the Carbon fairings will be last.

I and 5'8" and weigh 155lbs before gear so not much I can drop in weight there.

I like it! most people don't understand, but as a Sprint car owner/crew chief, weight is cumulative, once you get to a certain point in the weight loss program, you have to go after all the small stuff, because it all adds up, nice work.

Ditch those termis n go with Akrapovic and you'll shed another 4-5 pounds. Plus it will look and sound much better :)

Gecko, I think you and I will get along great! I obsess in this department as well. It's a fun challenge for me!

Have you weighed your SL? I'm interested in what numbers you get 'wet' and 'kerb'.

I just weighed my 'R on a set of racing scales that are calibrated. I was at 415lbs fully topped off and 383 kerb weight.
I was shocked at the wet weight, but just because I hadn't done the math. It makes perfect sense. Fun stuff! :D

Weight Loss fun slanted toward the Military among us.

1. SITUATION
Panigale owners that are using some add on software to retune their bikes and are no longer using the O2 sensors in the exhaust system. Those that have fitted an Akrapovic and may be using Tuneboy software.

2. MISSION
Owners are to remove the O2 sensors, in their own time, in order to save weight and increase power to weight ratio.

3. EXECUTION
If O2 sensors are not required due to the software an owner is using, then remove the plug and wiring and the wiring plug. Each plug wire and wire plug weigh 67.1 grams. Use an appropriate threaded bolt to plug the hole in your exhaust. In the case of the Akrapovic systems, Mr Akrapovic supplies two Titanium bolts just for this purpose which are pre drilled for safety wire. For those with Akra systems these Ti bolts weigh 16.9 grams. Safety wiring optional.

4. ADMINISTRATION AND LOGISTICS
Standard tools are required. Torque setting for the Akrapovic bolts are 34 nm. Use copper anti seize grease on assembly. Total weight saving for both bolts and sensors is 100.7 grams for Akra system. Note. Separate PM to keeper of the weight spreadsheet.

Good thing for me you are not checking it then. Did you check Gilles out ?

yeah, I had a squiz at the web site when you first mentioned them. I don't mind the time it takes but will be doing rearsets before I put a lot of effort into bars. I actually like the look of the gilles rearsets but they've not got good feedback on here from what I've found.

I found the Gilles stuff to be excellent quality. Although they did send me two faulty parts. The instructions were incorrect. Having said that they did fix it quickly. The clip ons I bought were brand new in their range so it explained a few things. It was a bit of a saga, so much so that the Australian rep sent me some free front axle sliders, but they did not fit. They probably fit an 1198 or something.

I did the clip on job in 2012 so I am sure there is more stuff out there now. BTW My first attempt at safety wiring.

BTW My first attempt at safety wiring.

in that case not too bad then...given the military comments i thought you may have been in aviation trade in the past, that's where my comment was angled toward.

All good mate. I am an Infantry man just coming up on 34 years. Not an aviation tech. Have been in a few aircraft though, in fact there has been about 350 times I took off in one but did not land in it.

All the hard landings (parachute ones) have caused some damage to my neck which is why I went the raised clip ons. Think I might be mixing up threads here. My apologies.

Next time I have the fairing off to clean will give that safety wiring another go. Have looked at some you tubes of the finer points.:)
