I have recently taken my Ducati 1199s into the service department here in Dallas Tx. I brought it in because the bike was burning oil. I was then told that they were going to go ahead and replace the cylinders pistons and rings. I also told them there was a time constraint because I am moving to California May 1st. It has been in there for two weeks and the deadline is approaching. Now there are saying since the cylinders are still in Italy that they are just going to replace the rings. What do you guys think i should do?
demand that the cylinders and pistons get replaced at the same time?
get just the rings?
get my bike back and take it to San Jose CA?

I am concerned that just replacing the rings will not completely fix the problem.

Bike has less than 3,500 miles

ps still waiting to hear if Ducati would consider shipping the bike after repairs are completed in TX. (not likely)

Replace the rings and then move to Cali. If it's still burning oil after you get there, you can always take it to a dealer where you're going.

How much oil is it burning?

I agree with Charlie, the new rings may just fix your problem. But, I'd rather have my bike with me and use a local dealer to repair again if needed. Once you move there will be less motivation to get it done and shipped out to you.

i thought the bike burned oil anyway as part of the break in period i could be wrong though. my m3 burned oil so does my 335is. the m3 i had to add a quart about every 3 months.

Yeah but that is BMW... dont BMWs break down immediately after the warranty?

:D

I use AMS in dallas. I have had nothing but great service from them and I know there hands are tied on this one because the parts being on back order. Its just depressing.

Just got a phone call from AMS, there taking care of me as usual. Ill miss this service department when i leave

They do. Until rings seat properly in cylinders during break-in you can expect blow by in any motor (at least of the 4-stroke variety) to burn some oil.

That's why I was wondering how much oil was being lost.

If you like the guys your with just leave the bike with them and pay to truck your baby home when they are finished.

Saves going through the drama of explaining the situation all over again to another dealer.

I feel fortunate that when my bike had issues with oil burning and it was also leaking a little bit of oil that they were able to get me a brand new crate engine instead of having to deal with rebuilding it.

Curious, since you've done two track days the rings should be well seated. What type of break-in did you follow? Good luck with the repairs.

The cylinder sleeves can be re-honed right at the dealer (cross-hatch finish like new), unless there was a specific sleeve material problem. That with new rings = like new.
