I am looking to get a second set of wheels for my 1199s. I found some base 1199 wheels a great price. Besides the design the only difference I see is my 1199s marchesini wheels are forged alloy.

Would the base wheels be a downgrade ? Which ones are stronger ?

The base wheels are heavier so yes from a S wheel they are a downgrade . As for which is stronger should not be a concern if you are able to damage either while riding my guess you have crashed .
They are both strong .
If you are going to use the base wheels for wet weather tyres they will be perfect .

If you track the bike use the S/R wheels for the track and base wheels for the street.. And the Base Wheels are heavier so they are a downgrade.

I have a set of S wheels that I would part ways with for the right price.

:D

Thanks for info.

What would be a step up from the S wheels? BST?

Carbon fiber wheels would be the step up from the s wheels weight wise.

Flo is right.. I was tired when typing.. in order of bottom to top upgrade

Base Wheels
S/R Aluminum
Magnesium
Carbon Fiber..

Sorry, my response for magnesium was being a step up over the "S" forged aluminum.

I'm not sure on what's better between CF and Mag but sounds like the above from b9009b is that CF is better. He's an upstanding great citizen here so I'm sure his order is correct.

The only thing I thought I heard about the CF is potential lip damage with lots tire changes vs Mag. But I could be full of .... and didn't hear this correctly.

So after a few google searches to further educate myself, it is correct above as I thought from b9009b. CF is lighter and stronger than Mag. It sounds like there can be issues with damage to CF if the wrong tire changer is used.

I just gave him the general opinion on them.. I would never run CF wheels.. Hell I would probably never run Magnesium wheels unless it was on the track.. The roads we have hear I want lead cast wheels lol.. Plus I don't think one single person on this forum could even feel any kind of difference between the Forged Aluminum/Magnesium/CF Wheels.. If they can they are a God!

You might feel the difference, but the real question is:
How much faster does it actually make you?

On the street? Pfffft.

On the track? Show me.

After I put S wheels on my base model I didnt get any quicker.. but I could feel a difference, from there and up I wouldnt notice it..

Agreed. Yea CF and Mag wheels sound cool and fast but at my level I would spend the money on track time, tires, and riding schools.

I have swapped wheels on several bikes (used Forged Alum, Magnesium and CF) and I can feel a difference.

Magnesium upgrade over carbon?

Am I seeing this correctly?

Forged Alloy (marchesini) < carbon < magnesium

You have that backwards (at least as far as weight is concerned). Carbon Fiber wheels are lighter than Magnesium.

But the best "bang for the buck" wheels are the 10-spoke Marchesini Genesi Forged Aluminum wheels (that is what I have on the R6). They are very strong, but those new 10 spoke ones are lighter than the previous 7-spoke Marchesini Magnesium wheels I had on my R1.

Care has to be taken with CF wheels and they typically turn the pressure down on the tire changing machine. I have had BST CF wheels on my 675 for 5 years and they are still like new. But I only get the tires changed at the track by professionals.
