This past weekend at my local dealer (Hudson Valley Motorcycles, Ossining NY), Ducati NA did a motor tear down - here are a few crappy iphone pics:

Wanted to attend but had a wedding to go to in Philly. How is Hudson Valley's service department as far as competence/price?

cont'd...notice the gold rectangle screens in one of the photos....that is the 2nd of 3 oil filters -- 2 are non serviceable, the one you see here, and another screen in the take-up pump, the 3rd filter is the one we remove doing oil/filter change -- evidently the 1199 has a zero bypass oil system (unlike other motors) that keeps oil pressure always constant -- if you look close under the green o-ring, you can see the oil jet (U shaped tube) that sprays oil up under the piston

 Why are they taking apart a new engine? And where is the sealant on the cylinder heads?

i'd say excellent - i've been going there for years (they are very knowedgleable and well connected to the industry, in business since 1966 same people)...if you aren't happy where u are i doubt you would be disappointed - they offer pick-up and drop off as well, which helps if you are not close by -- price wise, more than fair

a few more.......the second picture, while not very clear as to what it is (sorry) is the infamous thermostat housing that has cracked twice on me, causing coolant to be where you don't want it to be....i hear they have finally changed/upgraded it, but i won't know until the 3rd one gets some use

They are an awesome dealer. Richie Jr and Sr are class acts, former AMA champion and most knowledgable. RD16RR I am happy for you that these are the people you deal with. Can't say enough good things about them!

look at the size of those pistons... Every time I see the engine in the raw it makes me realize what I spent all that money on...

..since the early 1980's....(showing my age a bit) :)

Just one part of an entire work of art:)

Even with it's flaws;)
What ever they may be:rolleyes:

Flaws... not many there, but I hope the oil leak that my dealer is fixing right now will be the last one.

I'm really interested how the decompressor on the exhaust camshaft actually works.

I looked into all illustrations/pictures available with this unit, but so far I do not understand how this little lever generates a small exhaust valve opening (of one of the two exhaust valve) in the compression stroke while starting. The opening and closing cams of this exhaust valve don't look as they can rotate on the camshaft influenced by the position of the lever...

If anyone knows the principle, I would be happy to get it!

the Ducati NA rep went into detail on how simple it operated (my ears and crowd noise prevented me from fully absorbing it) but i seem to remember something about rotational forces upon startup that causes it to function, then upon start up adjusts to normal -- its the reason they can get away with a much lighter battery...and now, on the new R (already on the SL), a lithium ion battery...remains to be seen how the lithium holds up for normal use

-- sorry i couldnt be more help...but i wasn't listening close enough :)

-- another thing he pointed out was the constant oil pressure system the 1199 has, as well as the way they got rid of the crankcase breather, by the use of a vaned wheel on the end of the camshaft, pushing air out thru a labyrinth that is cast into the valve cover, pushing the oil back into the air box/combustion chamber...."no more crankcase breather":)

Would love to have a local dealer here in GA hold one of these clinics/workshops/whatever-you-call-its.

very informative, and fun for anyone that likes motors...while i enjoy it, i would prefer to just have the key :D
