another thing with first time bikes :

first bike at 18 with 1000 traffic miles behind you is exponantially more dangerous than first bike with 200.000 miles of traffic experience .. combine and the pani and no traffic experience and that is one lethal cocktail...

Great point but I dont think we are allowed to talk about it anymore.

He is going to be PISSED when he wakes up in the morning and see people are STILL talking about this!

I'll piggyback onto this topic as I have wanted to make a post here for awhile but unsure if I should go for the 1199 and considering the OP isn't posting I thought I'd step up.

I'm currently riding a Honda CBR 500R for my first bike, I will be riding this for the next 8 months daily till I get on my unrestricted opens (Australia) I'm not a young rider but new to the sport. I'm doing some advanced riding courses during this time with the HART, Stay Upright and CSS schools and trying to master my 48hp 500R building confidence and develop some tradecraft.

I was considering getting an MV Agusta F3 as a stepping stone to the Panigale, but to be honest I just want to cut the crap and take the bike of my dreams. Keeping it in Wet Mode would make the 1199 similar to the F3. Is this a wise move? Should I do my time in the 600 class before moving up?

Thanks guys for any input.

Dont't know about your means but an F3 is as valuable as a base model Pani and just as expensive when you drop it.

Not a question of killing yourself, your CBR is way enough for that, but it's the goof ups in driveways and parking lots or slow traffic that end up costing you money.

Get a older Gixxer, R1 or Blade with a few scars for your first literbike and horse around with that for a year. Chances are you won't even lose much money selling it after.

You'll be all right......I managed to survive 1098SFS as my first bike, had a blast for 23K+ miles on it, and have 6k+ on my Panigale.
It's all about what you've got between your ears.

Damn!! now a 1098 SFS as a first bike....with that low down grunt had to be a hell of a first bike!
To me the smart thing is to buy a smaller , (not necessiarily a 250) cheaper bike just to learn on.
That said if someone isn't afraid of dropping a brand new 1199 and think they can handle it to me thats their choice and it works out for some people.
It just wasn't the route for me.
I'm 45 and just started riding 3 years ago. I knew I wanted a monster 696 but did not want to drop a brand new Ducati!! I bought a 91 nighthawk 250 for $750, rode it for 6 weeks and sold it for $700 and bought the 696.
The 696 was a super easy bike to ride and looking back I could have started on it.
Like I said, I just didn't want to drop it.
Since then I have bought and sold a Suzuki 800 intruder, Ducati 848, Honda CBR 600, Harley V rod and a Daytona 675.
Right now I have a Multistrada 1200 and an 1199 Tri colore.
At my "peak" I had the 696, the CBR, the 1199 and the MS all in the garage :)
Yea...you could say I drank the motorcycle coolaid!!

And don't get me started on gear!!

With OP's participation, or not this thread has a potential to becom a sticky since the subject of 1199 as a first bike comes up fairly often.

IMHO, the 1199 is not that much of a beast, if you're set to get a sports bike as your first.

Weight is low, CoG is low, riding position is upright, power is smooth, electronic safety aids present, riding modes etc....

Really, its all about what happens during the learning experience and how much it costs to fix.

Same for cars, sure you could go Porsche as a first, just gonna be expensive to fix the mistakes.

Hi. I was wondering whether a panigale might be my first bike. I believe this as the panigale has a map with 120hp so it would turn into the equivalent of a super sports bike and with a little throttle control it would be tameable; or would it...

maybe you should read my thread "what would you do..." to see how well you can handle 1199 as first bike hahaha

I see a lot off people are talking about the cost when you lay the bike down. I'm not concerned about the cost for the OP. I'm more worried about his safety and life. People say that you could get killed/hurt on a 250 which is true and there are many circumstances we cannot control like other motorist being idiots. Taking a MSF course will help mitigate that but things we try to control and practice what the MSF doesnt teach while being a New Rider/first bike like getting over those survival reactions a 250 won't get away from you as easily as the Pani will while trying to develop those riding skills. Some people are athletic and have natural skills/talent/no fear to handle a 1k bike as their first bike but remember majority of people do not and recommending the closet production bike to a WSBK as a first bike is just plain crazy. It's like telling a someone to play Russian roulette.

it's like you are wondering if you should date that super hot chick in that miniskirt with full tattoo sleeve and face piercings, who cares if she leaves you a few scars and an empty wallet, make your life worth it, will ya? lol

joking aside, 1199 is a pretty safe and easy to ride FOR A DUCATI, if you can afford the repair from common newbie mistakes, go for it
