Got rained on a little during a ride, not enough to get me very wet through a perforated summer jacket, but the 1199S didn't like it a bit. On the freeway at 0-65mph (got stuck in a 10 mile jam behind an accident too), noticed gear indicator was showing 4, and I was in 6. In a couple minutes gear indicator was bouncing all around. Stalled the bike at a stoplight because it indicated N and it was likely in 1. Menu 1 switch didn't want to work. Engine ran as before. Didn't notice any other display irregularities but didn't check them all while I was in rush hour traffic in the rain. Did notice the traction control light come on leaving a stop turning right, didn't feel it so it worked well. After 15 minutes was home, stopped bike, decided to see if it would start, and it wouldn't spin the starter. In 2-3 minutes it decided to start normally after switch on/off/starter tries 3-4 times. Parked for the nite, will see how it does tomorrow.

Any similar experiences/suggestions for what to look for? Seems like one of those intermittent electrical things I hate that would be hard to reproduce/diagnose/fix. thanks for any ideas, Paul

Well I got caught in a crazy, weird downpour here in San Diego. I had no issues that you had. Shift indicator and all other electronics to speak of worked fine. The starting thing can be remedied by removing the charcoal canister, if you haven't already heard about that haha. If you don't know, it can solve hard starting issues when the engine is hot :) I had my removed at the first service and have had no hard starts since.

You should not be in 6th gear on this bike at less than say 140mph or you're bogging the engine. Use 3rd or 4th for legal freeway speeds. I've driven over mountain passes in torrential downpours without any electrical issues.

i've had a terrible experience in the rain...stalled and was almost killed for it, multiple times....

Stand on it rain or shine lol

Never had an issue.

Gear Indicator problem

Thanks for the replies. I thought it was a wetness issue since this was the first time I was out in the rain and searched under rain problems. Didn't think it was heat since it actually was a lot cooler after it rained. (have the left wiring control recall yet to be done, it does act up reliably when hot) Will try the first gear after shut off and see what happens. I will check the battery ground as well. If that doesn't resolve things then off to the dealer, at least armed with some information to help them address the problem. Thanks again for the help.

BTW, carbon canister has been removed and has not had any hot start issues. Rizoma rearsets (like them a lot) for last 1000+ miles.

Gear indicator problem in rain

The 1199 rested for 48 hours in first gear, rained all day yesterday. Sun came out today and bike started like usual, no anomalies in display of any parameter that I could tell, menus all worked as intended. 10 mile city/freeway ride absolutely perfect. So now the bike is dry and working normally. Should I:
1 see about replacing gear indicator anyway?
2 any way to waterproof the gear indicator? could be connections remote from indicator?
3 never ride in the rain again-or is this a red herring and the rain had nothing to do with it?
4 ?

air temp around 70, bike water temp in 170 range most of the ride, right turn signal worked normally so I know it wasn't hot:)

Any thoughts out there from the collective experience? Thanks, Paul
