Hello everyone!

I have been offered a good deal on a 1199 S and was very impressed when I rode it last week. I then jumped on a new 1299 S...

Based on my feelings, the 1299 S was smoother in the power band but on the roads it was hard to tell the two bikes apart.

It's going to be a daily rider and I don't have a limitless budget so the question is, do I go for the 1199 S or a standard 1299?

It may seem like a tough decision but to me its not all that complex

Figure out what you like about both machines and how much would it cost to bring the One machine up to par with the other...

So if you like the 1299 Base, figure out how much it would cost to eventually get ohlins or better suspension on the 1299 (keep in mind that it may not be as simple as in the past to just slap on new suspension bits, you may not get the electronic controlled suspension of the S model)

If you like the smoothness of the 1299 Base, then figure out how much it would cost for you to get a better tune on the 1199S to make up for the sluggishness of stock map.

As far as horse power goes, if you can tell a difference between 195 hp claimed, and 205 hp claimed..you are a better rider than me

Good luck

With extra money, you can plug he gaps on the 1299base (suspensions, lightweight wheels), but it is much much more difficult to plug the gaps on the 1199S (geometry, engine displacement, hp and torque curves).
Warranty and age are also factors to consider.

If you are like me, however, like the gold front end and can never justify myself buying ohlins forks and lightweight wheels by themselves, I'd rather save a bit more extra and wait for 1299S to come my way.

Thanks for getting back to me.

The cost of fitting Ohlins would be prohibitive from my experience. Plus, does anyone know if the base ECU has the sensors for the electronic suspension?

You can't feel to difference in ultimate power but you can clearly feel the smoother power curve.

Like I said, this bike will live on the roads so picking up the odd second per lap is not really relevant here.

I was looking at Power Commanders, are they still used with good results? I used to run with a 2008 R1 and Arrow cans. That setup was loads of fun!

if this was going to be a streetbike, and of course the cost difference is quit a bit i would assume... I would opt for the 1199S.

This was my thinking when i bought my 2012 1199S.. $12,000 for a modded bike with low miles and a longer warranty than a new bike.
Yes the 1199S has a bit less power and tech for the electronic aids... but the old bike is still quite a fun experience.

Ohlins is not much about the track. A well sorted forks is as good.
Gold forks is more about personal fetish. For me anyway it is

I have the same opportunity at my local Ducati dealership... They have a great deal on a black 2014 1199 S under the price of a new 1299 base. The 2016's are about out and they need to move the inventory.

I'm a street rider and I'll likely never hit a track... I do some spirited riding through the mountains out here in New Mexico... but that's about it. I like the upgrades you get with the 1199 S model and the matte black is growing on me... I could care less about the HP difference between the two bikes.

Which one to get...

Marine get the 1199s for the street or a 1299s ... The electronic suspension on the street is like having dave moss in your ECU..

OP.. Are you going to the track or just street?

Ah, but it's different if the gaps to plug on the 1199 are only the swing arm geometry. I've never wanted more power from an 1199. And IMO the 1199 looks a bit nicer, and it'll be the collectable Panigale, like the 916 is.

Adjustable swingarm from the R, and a good dyno tune. Advantage 1199 IMO, no wheels or as much suspension to buy. Not sure if I want the shorter rake of the 1299 anyways, just the swingarm pivot.

I am running a PCV with autotune and a reflashed ECU and I am smiling from ear to ear.
