My bike was running fine, been left about 2 weeks (came off on the track) it was running after the crash, but refuses to start now, it turns over, its pumping fuel but its not firing, im not sure if its the starter motor, ive checked all the fuses, the wiring, took the tank off, i dont know what else i can do to locate the problem, i dont have the required electrical tools to test things and i refuse to pay Ducati to look at it, thanks for advanced for any help!

2 options if you don't have the tools to do the work..

1. Pay the dealer to check it out and sort the problem..

2. Sit back and stare at it till it starts..

Engines need:
1)fuel
2)air
3)ignition

You have two being delivered. Buy a multimeter and check for frayed/broken cables. Ohm all the wires out between fuses and sensors. You don't need a diagram to inspect the harness. Make sure the ignition and start button are sending/receiving power. Hope this helps.

Check the side stand sensor that does not let the bike start with the stand down.

Thank you, im going to buy a multimeter later today, i have stripped the bike down and the starter motor seems to be good, no damage, cables seem fine at the connections, will check properly with multimeter, im thinking spark plug or maybe the plug cap, but the bike ran perfectly fine after the crash, also discovered a fuel pressure pipe hanging off, but thats not the problem, ill buy a multimeter!!!! Haha

I doubt that both cylinder plugs would fail simultaneously ? And if it's cranking the starter and it's electrical cct's will all be good.
If one plug failed or is damaged you will still get periodic firing, ......reading your posts I'm not sure you should swing spanners, or even worse play with the electrics;)
Obvious check will be the kill switch and it's connections, they could be damaged when you refer to crash?
Basic fault finding is very easy but you need a clue, and with respect your clueless approach will cost you more than a dealer visit if you damage a component

How is my approach clueless? The bike was running, ive not done anything with the kill switch apart from take it off the broken clip on, put it on the new one and it started, but im not sure where to check electrically from point to point, what i mean by that is everything is hidden under something, im suspecting that it is an electrical fault now, rather than mechanical, and yes, im not electrically minded, im mechanical, but if i dont know how to do something then i want to find out how, no need to slate me for asking!

Well u say it's not starting? Is it cranking? Clue 1. If it cranks then more than likely the entire start kill sw cct's are ok, next has it got gas? Stupid question I know but I read on PH about a race bike that was pulled down to parts as it would not start and it was fuel.
If it cranks and has gas, then it could be a fuel pump issue? Can you hear the fuel cct's pressurize and pump running? If not it could be as simple as the pump fuse, in witch case it's a 1 dollar fix and no need for a fluke digital tester:)

Some basic things that can be diagnosed with out even touching a tool, ...if it's totally dead it could be a batt problem or an ignition energizing cct issue.
If you want serious help you need to give the boys on this forum details ...with some details we can come together and try and help, but simply say it won't start and offer no supporting comments is being a bit vague.
We also all want to learn, so we all benefit from faults and the diagnosis from the wealth of the experienced

What damage was done to the bike? Just fairing damage, or did a clipon snap, etc?

Sometimes my 899 does not like to start after being on the tack and then sitting for a few weeks either so I just jack it up with some starting fluid and it starts right up and then no issues at all. I think in my case its just a lack of fuel getting to the injectors after sitting so long.

If this does not work then your off to the kickstand switch, kill switch and the other good suggestions made by others. Good luck and report back with your findings.

Thanks, the damage was mainly fairing and clip on breaking, no oil leaks, battery isnt bad, holds charge, and yes, it cranks, there is fuel going in but no spark, when turning the key on the pump primes and is ok, ill add a picture to this comment, my main thought is its electrical, a cable pulled out of the connection block? There is no warnings on the dash, the kick stand works fine, ive got to the spark plugs, however the spark plug tool ive got is too big:( ill purchase one

I lowsided on the same side as you and the clip on snapped as well. Same issues as you.
Turned out to be that a wire to the starter switch snapped UNDERNEATH THE SHRINKWRAP. So, there was no way to physically see the issue.

Might be worth taking a look to see if the same thing happened to you.

Try this:
1) make sure pump is priming and sending fuel.

2) crank bike over a couple of cycles and inspect spark plugs immediately, they should be wet if it's sending fuel into the cylinders properly.

If they are bone dry try checking the chambers, if there's still no sign then there's something going on with the fuel delivery.

3) now if the plugs are wet then we know there's fuel and obviously air in the chamber. What I would check next is to see if there's a spark.

If there is no spark then it's ignition related. You don't need a $500 fluke multimeter. Go to home depot or your nearest auto parts store and buy one that can ohm out. Grab the wiring diagram from the service manual that's available on this forum (thank you!) and check wiring while you have a couple of friends and beers over :)

No matter what damn type of vehicle it is, if it has an I.C.E. the basic principles apply!

Hello all, thanks for your suggestions, it turns out that it matters what way round you put the throttle back on and it thought it was at 100% throttle! i should have took pictures, but you can put it on 2 ways which caused confusion, but even at 100% throttle it still turned as it should and felt fine! Feel stupid now haha, all them hours wasted when it was the throttle position!

I got the exact same problem after changing broken parts. Thanks for this forum and topic to safe me who knows how much time. Problems fixed in 10 minutes. Thank you.
