Hi, you guys aren't going to believe this. My wife and I took our new 1299's (1 month old, 2700km's and first inspection done) for a ride last weekend here in Germany. We were cruising at 180km/h when suddenly her 1299 started making noises and lost power as if it was only running on 1 cylinder. Then there was a huge bang and her back tire locked up- the skid mark was 200 meters long. She managed to pull the clutch and was able to roll to a stop without dropping it. The motor is completely seized up, no tire movement in 6th gear at all. At the moment it is being torn apart at our Ducati dealer to find what caused the failure. The mechanic's first guess is that the timing chain ripped or a valve fell into the cylinder. I'll post an update as soon as I know more. The warranty of course covers a new engine and new back tire, but I'm totally shocked that a part could fail like that with the quality standards that we have today...

Firstly, totally gutted for you. Secondly, great skills from the wife on stopping without dropping it. I know I'd of been eating Tarmac!

Not defending Ducati at all ( I'd be fuming) but it's amazing what tiny little imperfection that is not noticeable can cause massive distruction down the the line. You only have to look at air crash investigations to see this. An under or over torqued bolt/nut, Some thing as small as a grain of dirt in a weld, a tiny air pocket in a structure, to a small amount of 'grease' under a paint surface. As for composites the difference between what appears to be a clean surface and completely clean surface is staggering.

Hope you get it fixed ASAP.

Oh ....! glad she could stay on the bike!!! 180 is no joke, but in the end the speed probably saved her.

please report back what they find what caused it!

Phil

@Southwest, yup it is just plain bad luck. I can't expect that every single bolt or moving part gets x-rayed before it is installed- maybe 1 out of 1000 gets it done for quality control. The worst part is the damn long break in period for the new motor ;-)

bad news but good news that no one got hurt. At least when something catastrophic damage, it is easy to find cause and Warranty will fix it.

When you or dealer don't know the issue when you get more headache...

Well, they say if it is going to fail catastrophically it will so early on. That is why all performance motors get dyno tuned and performance cars all get test driven extensively. Ducati does a compression test and tiny dyno run... Never test ridden as far as I know.

I'm so glad your wife is safe after this horrific incident.

This is scary I hope Ducati is not a problem bike we might have to get rid of ours if this is the issue :(

Thing is then she should not ride at all as ALL manufacturing bikes has problems and recalls. Quick google search will tell you. Yamaha, Honda, BMW and etc...

But I will say that first time hearing about incident like this in this forum from me.

Oh boy!!! I'm sure glad to hear that your wife knew how to handle it and that she's ok.

Please let us know what they find out.

Pretty bold statement to make that his wife shouldn't ride because all bikes break.

But I will say this, I have owned different bikes and hung around guys and girls with just about every major brand....NONE of them break with the frequency of Ducati, NONE. If you dispute that you are kidding yourself and drinking the red kool-aid. But with that said...I positively loved my Ducati, and enjoyed every time I rode it. Enough that I will buy one again when the H2 gets old. BUT, I go into the purchase knowing it will break non stop and have exorbitant shop fees. I can deal with that. Thats actually part of the buying process in my mind, to understand that. If my H2 broke at the frequency that Panigale's break I would lose my mind. Remember I say this as a person who loved my Panigale, still today....but to say they dont break down constantly is like saying you honestly believe Hillary doesn't have serious neuro problems :)

Whew...not genuflecting to almighty Ducati, and Hillary all in one paragraph....Let the hating commenceeeee !

lol

Ok. First of all, I AGREE with you about Hillary.

Secondly, I never Said "they dont break down constantly" but I will say now that they dont break constantly like you are saying.

And I will tell you that with my own experience with 2 panigales that I've own(12 and 16) which you cant argue with. If you had a problem with yours then that sucks (I cant argue with your point there either) and I hope it doesnt happens to me...

Again, google top motorcycle recalls and you will see other than DUCATI being on top.

However, I'm not saying Ducati is 100% problem free. I've been on this forum since almost it started and heard it all (mostly same people over and over and over):D

And dont take my comment out of context. All I am saying is Motorcycles are DANGEROUS on the road and when things go bad, it is a lot worse than a car.

There are few that stick around this forum (even after getting something else) who seem to had a bad experience with Panigale, which sucks but all I'm saying is there are many more who dont have it as well..

Yes, holy .... the 26th will be the most epic night in near memory...I told my boss I dont care what is going on at work, I WILL be leaving to be home to watch this meltdown.

Cool, opinions vary. But lets look at facts. This board is 30% how do I make my bike go faster or make it prettier, 70% my bike is broken and I need help.

You "hope it happens to you"....weird ok. but good luck. I can stop by and run it over with my truck if it makes you more comfortable. Just kidding, I know ur typing fast.

Dangerous my ..., that woman walked away from a blown engine (Hmmm, Ducati again, see a trend)...while she was riding, maybe you should take notes from her and not criticize :)

NOLA.

(I still loved my Panigale...This isnt a mean message)

I was still editing when you quoted. yes I hope it "doesnt" happen to me.:D

You can see the correction above. What is up with 26th? I dont get it.

If you thought I was criticizing then you definitely took it or I came across the wrong way.

and NOLA...come on man. How can you say lets look at FACTs and throw out numbers like that? since that is absolutely not a fact.

If you can prove that, I'll buy you a bike other than Ducati. If you cant then you buy me a another Ducati of your choice?

Top 10 biggest recall by manufacturer

Just did a quick search and pasted first one that popped up. I understand that this is not all the variables as far as breaking down vs recalls but still gives you a perspective.

Kawasaki was 3 highest and 5 was Ducati.

ok maybe that is too extreme and even though I know I am right :D you wont come through.

How about I buy you a Ducati hat if you are right and you buy me a hat of your motorcycle brand choice if you are wrong?

Hi guys, I hope I didn't start any arguments. I've owned close to 20 different superbike motorcycles including 5x Ducati, 6x Kawa Ninjas, 3x Suzuki GSX-R, 1x Honda SP-1, 4x Yamaha R1 R6. From a mechanical standpoint I can say that Kawa and Suzuki had the worse major problems (broken valves, warped camshaft) and the Ducati the most minor problems (monthly clutch line bleeding, tire air loss, shutting off for no reason, rear brake line bleeding etc). The Yamahas always ran perfectly, but the suspension was ...... in combination with that powerful motor. The Honda was just heavy, but reliable. But from the fun factor (the noise, the styling, the awesome suspension, the lightness), nothing beats the Ducati in our opinion. It's like buying a Ferrari- you are always going to have issues, but having one is a total rush and a whole lot of fun!

Ty you didn't. It's just discussing different points of view with different experience. Hope everything will be fixed soon.

I appreciate letting us know.

And this is why we need the clapping hands emoticon on forums. Hats off to you. Perfectly stated. Especially the part about Killary. I'm sorry. I mean Monica. Ah .... it ya know who I mean. (I know im not funny).

But do remember the boards attract those with issues. The silent majority are those satisfied with their relatively problem free bikes and don't bother to post.

IMO my 2 Ducatis had more faults than the previous Japanese bikes, nothing major like the OP, just niggles. I think there are 3 reasons. Firstly technology has moved on and the bikes have so many more sensors and electronics now that can be fickle. Secondly the nature of the big twin that shakes everything and exposes any weakness. Lastly the mechanic is often time pressured and some things get missed. Not a dig at my dealer, just the way things are now. All that said I've enjoyed the Ducati's far more regardless.
