Hi,

I'm new to the Forum and I've got a technical issue regarding the clutch/transmission (probably...):

It's a 1299 from 2015 with now about 1k miles. First service done.
Before the first service, so at about 400-500 miles I noticed kind of a metallic knocking noise when in neutral and clutch released.
As soon as I pull the clutch lever the noise is gone immediately.

It seems to come from the clutch or transmission side of the bike and you can feel it in the whole right fairing.

Any ideas?

I already told my dealer and they said it was "normal". Can't believe that... As I took 2 other 1299's from my dealership and none of them has the same issue.

So they took the clutch apart and tightened the torque of every part in it as they told me.
Didn't help...

It's starting to drive me crazy..

PM imbloodyskintagain on here, he has the same noise with his. Seems some do and some dont make this noise. I have heard it myself

In all seriousness if the dealer took it apart and it's still under warranty for a couple of years I wouldn't worry about it. All clutches make some noise when engaged and disengaged.

It's normal, can you feel the clutch lever kick a bit as well ? also normal, you should hear the KTM LC 4 in the Duke R it sounds like it's going to drop a valve....and it's normal,

past twenty or so sport bikes I've owned did this exact same thing so i'd say its normal

even ducati dry clutches make less noise with the clutch pulled in / springs compressed . probably the same reason

You better check the threads started by TankSlapper.

Gearbox rattle when the bike is in neutral is pretty common. Some bikes do it more than others - leave them idling in neutral and listen to how the engine noise changes when you pull the clutch in.
The Panigale engine has some pretty big firing pulses and not that much crank inertia so all the gears, including the clutch, rattling around a bit when they're unloaded in neutral shouldn't be too surprising.
More cylinders makes it all better but not everyone wants a 4-cylinder...:)

The video posted by tankslapper is a misfire / engine knock.

The sound I assume the OP is asking about is a faint metallic chatter which is the clutch plates shimming around in the clutch basket.

As some have commented some rattle more or less. Mine rattles just the same and it did so from day one. About ~5,000 miles on mine and I have had no issues with my 1299.

Just ride the bike and enjoy all the loud noises.

And then according to his "Bike caught on fire" thread, it ended up catching on fire during a ride.

I guess all our bikes will catch fire one day, so everyone please take cautionary measure and make sure you're wearing nomex suits inside your leathers.

its the clutch plates rattling due to the big twin rapid slowing and speeding of the crank. get used to it

Thank you all for your replies so far!

Gave me some ideas to tell my dealer next time.
In fact I really don't notice any further issues with the bike or strange behaviour.

But one question: Why don't the 2 other 1299's I had in comparison (each with different mileages) have that noise? And mine's really utterly loud.

What I mean is that I can hear it despite the loud pipes and helmet on my head.

Also it gets louder when the bike is warm and when I'm standing on a stop in neutral and I push it forwards a bit it sometimes gets less o_O

Yeah it's normal. When the clutch is engaged the plates are squeezed together and tight, when you have it released they are loose. And when your bike isncoldnthe oil is a bit thicker so that's why you can't hear it as much.

What kind of oil do you have in your bike btw?

Also when the oil level is close to minimum, the engine is more rattling and noisy.
The difference between min and max level is only 100 cc but it makes a substantial difference in noise level.
So check oil level also, those huge big pistons have a tendency to "consume" some oil.
