Hi All,
I am reassembling my engine after a primary gear failure and need some help. I don't have special tool 88713.3925 to hold the primary gear while torqueing up the bolt. Has anyone used a different method to hold the gear while tightening? Also the tool shown in the manual has four pegs or prongs but there is only one hole in the gear so not sure how it would work anyway.
Any advice would be appreciated.

...other prongs may go between gears... IF you don't have access to factory tool, you should be able to make tool to do the same with some metal plate, pipe and high grade bolts. If you do go that route make sure to put some heat shrink around bolts.140Nm is pretty tight!

i've used a Knot between gears before on other machines, with a bad feeling.
today i would use 2 soft aluminium bars, with some cutout "tooth" ,
connected parallel with screws. and clamp the gear with that.
should work.

I have always used red loctite and a good air gun on the crank nut

Never bought that special tool and never had a problem (never did duc twin yet either tho)

As yer last primary self destructed I could see how you might be leary to burp it

If that shock or vibration is going to damage the gear I do not see how it will last torqued correctly anyways

Do you?

I don't think Don14R has ever had one these motors apart far enough to barely change the oil let along talk gears or motor builds. Just another good example of mis leading people and bad info.

Where did you ever get the idea that I never rebuilt a Duc twin? I stated that in my post smokey

How do you know how many motors I HAVE built Mick? For all you know I built every short block Mike Dunn’s NHRA AA/TF team ever ran, Managed McFarlane’s entire machine shop, managed the cylinder head department at Taylor’s, and done a whole lot more...

*you’re prolly still running plastic water pump gears cuz yer scairt to pull a side cover : )

Whoa guys, lets stick to the subject. Still looking for the right tool from one of the dealerships here in NZ, will probably need to take the bike in and get them to lock up the gear, they won't want to hire the tool out.

Yeah pretty obvious that Don14R has it all figured out. I will be out of here and continue to stay in contact with everyone off the board.

Your positive energy will be deeply missed : )

Hey Neil If ya already have the monocoque and the swing arm on the motor you might try throwing a clutch in it and having someone hold the rear brake. Dunno if you can get wrench to click at 140 like that or not but if ya can it’s better than a trip to the dealer

Have someone heavy sit on it and put the front tire against a wall : )

What did you ever find out about not running a dampener????? That’s what I would really like to hear!

I wonder if this is the tool I need, the manual might be wrong.

With the flywheel removed you can use this tool to hold the crank

I thought about suggesting that but if he is scairt of what the vibrations of burping it on might do I did not think he would be down with the torsional load that would put thru the crank

Not sure I am either?

Anyways he doesn’t want to share any solution here. That’s cool. Have fun at the dealer

Ps talking to Robinson re the possibility of having him broach a one piece billet primary

make a

you can make one of these with some ali plate pretty easily, use a holesaw just big enough for the gear, then carefully drill some holes near the perimeter in such a way that the heads of the 4 -6 bolts youre putting in fit in teeth.

Yeah but that’s on the left end of the crank

Primary nut is on the right end so you would end putting 140nm of torsional load thru it

I have only had one crank break on me and I know damn well it’s cuz I did something similar. 3 seconds into a pass I pulled 20° of timing outta the motor for 1.5 seconds (trying to slow it down to the index). The timer and ...... box I set up to do this pulled the timing out and put it back in instantly, instead of ramping it in and out, and the motors own torque broke the crank
