Hi everyone, I hope you’re all doing good.
I recently came across a 1299 SL at a great price, super low mileage (under 500) and got me very exited as it is the bike that I always dreamed of and I’m very keen to get it. I like the new V4 line up too but I’m really not sure whether I should go for the v4r or 1299SL.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I think that you just said it yourself: the 1299SL is the bike you "always dreamed of." If you don't buy it, it sounds like you will always regret it.

There will always be a V4R available if you would like one later.

Sherpa23 thanks for your reply. As far as you know Have you or anyone you know tried the v4r? Is the new v4 line up a much better machine? Is the technology, dynamics etc way better than the 1299SL’s? I love the 1299SL but I wouldn’t want to get an outdated bike sort to speak. Obviously the v4 line up is a technological advancement but is there a huge difference in terms of performance? And if so, would we only be able to notice the difference if we were like pros competing for the WSBC or MotoGP ? I’m not a pro, I just wanna have fun on the track. (I think maybe I should add this to the title thread lol)

thanks again

Yes, I have ridden the V4R. It's an amazing bike. In some ways, it's the best bike I've ever ridden.

But what you're asking is impossible to answer : "is the technology, dynamics, etc way better than the 1299SL's?"

Well yes, it is. That's the progress of technology. And if that's what you're looking for then I guess you have to buy something new every single year to keep up or, conversely, you never buy anything because something newer is right around the corner and you can spend your entire life on the sidelines.

The reality is that you have to buy what you like and what you want. The roads are not enough to make use of even the 1199SL's technology, let alone the 1299SL. If you are concerned about buying the 1299SL because it is "outdated" then I don't think that I can help you. There will always be something newer with more technology. That doesn't mean that you enjoy riding it any more.

I can tell you that for me, personally, my most enjoyable bikes to ride are the ones with the least technology. I have never ridden anything - even my 1199 Superleggera - and said that I wished it had more technology. Furthermore, what I like about the V4R platform has nothing to do with its technology.

I think owning a SL is the dream of any Panigale rider! Can’t speak for performance since both are unattainable for me but as for looks, exclusivity and value the 1299 is well in front.
Good luck, and congrats with whatever you decide.

thanks so much for your great reply! That’s a very clever way to think about it-

If it's a track bike, and crash damage is a consideration, then V4R. Most V4 parts fit the R, so no drama if you crash.

Crash an SL, and you're calling Giuseppe in Italy for some very expensive Ducati carbon fibre parts.

As an example, swingarm. Easily replaced on an R. Huge money on an SL.

I'd love an SL, but I probably couldn't afford to crash it.

RickD996 - thanks for your reply. True, carbon parts are expensive though I searched online and full kit is btw 2500 and 5k? Could be lower quality carbon fibre? I just expected It to be way more expensive. Again, I’m not a pro, so I wouldn’t know much about it, maybe the fairings etc for the 1299 SL is a completely different story..

I guess, it's more in regards to swingarms and frames!

Although, maybe you're starting to convince me!

Always amazed me how with every new crop of bikes suddenly last years model is instantly so dated. You can’t go wrong with either bike but the SL is timeless. The other factor is the Ducati history, evolution and character of the twin Ultimately it’s a coin toss, you’re not getting to the end of either bike!
