Hello all, this morning when I tried to start my 1199S, the bike would not start, and streams of fuel were flowing out of the bottom of the bike. I pulled into the garage, cleaned up the mess, took off the fairings.

Having a closer look, I noticed the fuel was streaming directly in the center of the lower black plastic fan shroud on the bottom, coming out of that central rubber fuel hose.

Tracing that hose upward, it attaches behind the battery box to a black plastic downward-facing nipple. I had to remove the battery and box to see this.

No idea what that is, but it’s right below the air box.

So why would I be getting massive fuel leakage from that line? There was enough flow through it that it pushed the rubber line off the nipple. I’m gonna clamp that on securely next.

Could this be a bad fuel pump relay? Would that cause that line the overflow? The engine was not getting fuel and not turning over.

Any advice greatly appreciated it and thank you.

That’s a general drain hose for the air box. You have a fuel line leak. It’s draining into the bottom on the air box and out the vent line. Check all the plastic fuel lines going to the injectors, their O rings and the Interconnect junction. Obviously check the line from the tank to the interconnect and the plastic connector. Replace that thing with a metal unit regardless.

Yeah one your fuel lines cracked or blew one the fuel lines off the barbed fittings. I don't run any the factory components inside the airbox except for the bodies everything else is custom and bomb proof.

Got it, thank you Ed. I’ll get into all of that and check it out. 99% you’re correct , as I had it all apart not long ago as I installed my race exhaust and race air filter. All that topside stuff under the tank had to come off to install the race air filter. Doh!

On my previous 1098 bikes, I did have a metal fuel pump panel with metal interconnects. Do they offer that for the Panigales as well? Possibly on Motowheels??

Glad the leak occurred in the driveway and not running at speed, the bike could’ve caught on fire with that fuel hitting the exhaust header.

Tanti Gracie!
Greg.

Mick, That’s very cool, so you’ve cut custom-length higher-quality fuel lines looks like. Can you specify the type/gauge you used? I’m going to re-create that here. The factory lines do appear old, hard and brittle. Bike is 10+ years old at this point.

What else have you replaced, probably the tank-to-fuel line plastic interconnect as well, I would imagine? Again, where can I source that, Motowheels?

What’s that red Jetprime dealio?? :)

So yes I am using high pressure viton line its 6mm id/11od its pretty pricy stuff but works extremely well. The factory stuff is way brittle and can crack. I am still running the plastic quick disconnects I also have metal but never had the plastic fail and keep tons of spares so swap out regularly. They don't make a metal fuel pump flange like the aftermarket versions the older 1098/1198 platforms used. Yes also running the JetPrime stacks and my mill spec airbox harness.

Pegasus Auto Racing has the Aramid braided PTFE hose and fittings as well. I use the 910 hose and fittings. I like this setup as most of the fuel is routed internally in the injector setup so it’s very clean and easy to work around. You just have one main hose from the fuel manifold to the tank. Standard AN fitting on the manifold and tank, Staublie quick disconnect.

Mick thank you so much for the information, I’m really digging what you’ve done with your Panigale . Would love to know where you sourced your fuel lines and the jet prime parts. I’d like to try to re-create what you’ve done, for safety.

This is very reminiscent of what I did to a couple of older Ferraris I used to own, a 308, and a 328. For both of those cars, I went through and installed all new fuel lines from tanks through pumps to the fuel systems.

And you are correct, I just search the Motowheels website, and I don’t see any metal interconnect available for the Panigales like there were for the previous models. Bummer. Endodoc, where did you get yours?

I’m not using the stock metal replacement connector anymore on this setup. If you want it, shoot me a PM, I’ll just send it to you

Thank you Ed, I’ll do that this evening, I really appreciate it.

Ed, that picture you posted is amazing, I’d like to know more about it! We’ll chat later

Yep no problem man so yeah I will shoot over a pm with the part numbers and source for the line. You will also need some hose clip clamps they just standard hose clamps will work also. Yeah Corse Dynamics only made them billet fuel pump housings for the 98 platforms. I order all the metal quick disconnects from anyone who stocks the CPC fittings same as oem but you can get them in plastic or metal.

I found the leak- the plastic push-in fuel distributor off the tank feed was not fully-engaged and wet with fuel. I gave it a good push and it clicked. Hopefully it should be good to go.

All my plastic fuel lines look ok. I did order Viton 6mm fuel line to replace everything anyway- soon.

I’ll reassemble and test. Here’s a pic:

I remember leaving one of those connections loose after I took the tank off of my 1199 and saw a surprising amount of fuel leak out of it when I tried to start it.

Glad you go it sorted.

I much prefer the fuel line connection on the 1199 to the V4. Taking the tank off of a V4 is a pain because of it.

Good to know— one more reason to avoid the $$$ V4! Just kidding!

If memory serves, the 1098 series had 2 fuel line connections. The 1199’s single line is easy peazy

Oh. That sucks. Wonder why they designed it that way? Probably to discourage home mechanics from doing their own work.
