2012 1199S - what to know before buying

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I mentioned it while ago after my first test ride on the V4, and it was shared by a friend whos got an 09 Bayliss; The V4 is possibly the best sportsbike I've ridden, really nice but when I hopped back on to the 1299 it was like riding a tractor on steroids. Loud, raw, wheelie popping, anti social and just fun! The V4 is a bit more clinical, a better weapon overall, and a fitting evolution but what it gains in lap times it loses in soul.

In 2013, they added a sight window to check oil level. In 2012, you'll have to remove the fairing to check oil level.
Heatshield was upgraded if it's stock exhaust. I don't remember anything else.
I have an ‘13 1199S and my oil sight window is only visible through the crack between fairing and clutch cover.
The rear exhaust (stock) heat shield is the upgraded (bigger) one.
Mine was produced in July of 2012 though, maybe they added the fairing window since then?
Mine also had only 250 miles on it when I picked it up earlier this year, and all the rubber (tires,hoses,covers,etc..) are in great shape.

I’ve had both, and I would recommend going with the newest/most current you can afford. The one thing I miss, aesthetically, about the 1199S is the tail section. Off comes the cowling and on goes the seat. The 1299S gives you a puzzle. I originally purchased the 1199S, because I didn’t think there was anything much different from the 1299S, other than the wheelie control-the bikes however are completely different. The tech and options on the 1299S, I find, to be much more advanced. I’m very happy with the 1299S and see a difference in the 2 models.

Its a fun bike. Theres some things that I changed right away but i cant leave anything stock. Exhaust, rearsets, seat, tank extender, etc etc

No fun riding under 40mph, jerky. Typical ltwin.

Handling is ok.

I’ll be selling mine for a v4r in a year or 2.

Yes, if you don’t ride that machine at a higher rate, plan to go 8 seconds on the bucking horses. It’s an upgrade from the 1098 though, where the thing didn’t like to go below 20mph.

Would a Dyno tune clean up an 1199 like it does the 1299

my 1299 is very well behaved now. With the Akra UpMap it would try to throw me off mid corner. Traffic circles were the worst

r they using woolich? A couple of my tuner shop friends r waiting for them to support the V4

once I get back from quarantine, I’m planning to install the pit bull trailer restraint in my van so I can travel with it
Might need a bigger van soon

hello guys, i'm new here... im looking to buy a 1199S and found one in dubai for 10k usd and have 14k miles on the clock, i saw the bike on saturday and looks good with a lot of red bits ,pegs and the exhaust.

the bike is in the store for 1 year now trying to sell since the owner has moved to saudi arabia, he was asking 16k usd, the store turn the bike on regularly.

i had it before a R1 2007 and since i move from Brazil to UAE i was looking for a new "daily" bike , not so daily because the summer here is impossible to ride!!

so what i have to look on the bike any advice??

14K miles.

They are dumping that bike just before the $2,000 DESMO service at 15,000 miles

Buy a bike that has been tuned and exhaust it really changes them.

good point, the exhaust systems (even slipon) cost the new owners a fortune but they did it cause it’s a must have. You’ll see
The original owner doesn’t seem benefit from selling a used Ducati with the Ti exhaust, but it does make that bike more desirable to me.
the Clear clutch with beauty pieces is another one of these upgrades

I said it previously to someone asking if they should spend their hard earned money on it. if you take a test ride you will know the answer

if you want the bike buy the bike. I got a good deal on mine preowned with 1,800 miles on it and Akra already installed, but price I got it for quickly passed new bike prices after the first batch of accessories and renewing all fluids
So don’t buy a Ducati cause you think ur getting a deal. It’s expensive, it’s going to be expensive. Wait till u chew through the rear tyre in 2,000 miles

The biggest concerns for the stock 1199 are:
- hidious engline breaking and weight transfer, unreal to ride on any EBC mode, rater than in "3"
- difficult to get the marzocchis/sachs to work properly, I understeers alot...
- very unpleasant in slow corners, behaving like it has ON/OFF throttle

Rode V4S, it seemed much more refined. More BMW :D

Tricky choice for the first bike...
