lol at the guys acting like the 1098/1198 was some benign machine. I'd take my chances w a V4 sans electronics first.
Okay, you guys are getting a little silly. Most of the SFS/1098/1198 guys I knew had a tune and the suspension was obviously adjustable, so it was just a sportbike. Maybe an outrageous one at times, but all the control was still in your right hand. The V4's are better for tooling around town, but if that is your goal then you are missing the point.
To the OPs original point, I think this is the best time to get a V2. As someone pointed out in another thread the new engine is going to be smaller, and no doubt the riding sensations will become increasingly bland and even erased with more electronics. So now, take the current V2, add even more power and better suspension and unfortunately you have a better road going bike than the V4. Well, ducati can't have that, of course. Unless you are just up in the mountains with smooth twisties and big sweepers everywhere, then the V2 is already a better road bike than the V4. So get a low milage V2, and take your time setting it up how you like. Arrow slip on and OFT or Duessen, some sticky tires and you will have the cream of the crop. A tuned Bayliss is a lovely unit and they are under 20k.
Do you guy remember The Pace, by Nick Lenatsch. I mean, what is a guy trying to do on the road, especially as we get older. 30-90mph, momentum in the corners, but no more pegging it between them. What an enjoyable way to ride. Real life is all V2 territory. You're not going fast enough to need electronic intervention. You want to feel everything. I'd get a V2 and just slowly turn it into your hearts desire.
