2016 Panigale 1299, Should I Pull the Trigger or Pass on This One?

Found this gorgeous 2016 1299 locally for sale, asking price $15,000, total miles 1581.

I'm not new to Ducati having owned a '16 959 for eight years, so am familiar with ball roasting heat, punishing ergos, high replacement part prices, etc.

I've wanted one of these bikes for years though and am ready to buy it on Friday if I get a good vibe when I see it up close.

My reservations are eight years old and only 1581 miles, so what condition is it actually in?

Current owner is a former racer and international airline captain and he is a neighbor of a good friend of mine, a fellow sportbike rider who knows the owner well and says he is meticulous.

Bike is garage kept and the current owner bought it from a Ducati dealer with full service and new tires a few years ago.

I'm conflicted about this, he is asking top dollar for this machine in my opinion and I'm concerned about gummed up fuel system, possible internal corrosion etc. after sitting idle for so many years.

What should I look for to help me make a purchase decision?

Thanks!

John

You’re probably good either way. Looks well maintained. Looks almost 100% stock which is a good sign. Probably little worry about internal corrosion. But $15k for an 8 yr old base 1299 sounds like a lot. For an S model I’d be more keen on the price. Any chance there’s wiggle room in the price?

Buying a motorcycle, even new. always has a level of uncertainty. That pic does look great. A friend you trust vouching for it goes a long way in my book. I would go for it. Put aside a bit of money for new tires and battery. You can do basic maintenance yourself easily. Bleed the clutch and you should be good to go. I love my 1299.

they are not making any more of them and 1500 miles is nothing, go for it I say! They are so much fun, get yourself some for the good value aftermarket bling and begin the upgrade journey. There is no question that the V4 is more refined but I still think the 1299 is an immersive experience. As for price, just make an offer and see how it goes.

Thanks for your timely response SuperDomestique, yes I agree the asking price is a bit high, he initially offered the bike at $13,500 and I was all in at that price but when several potential buyers showed interest he suddenly bumped the asking price up to $15,000.

I don't want to lowball him, not my style at all, if the bike is clean and in excellent condition I want to make him a very reasonable offer, what do you think, based on the low mileage that offer should be?

Thanks also to everyone that responded to my inquiry on this thread, I greatly appreciate your expert opinions as devoted 1299 owners.

Interest shouldn’t drive up the bike’s price. It’s not an auction. That’s a shady way to sell a bike.

$15K is too high, you're getting into 1199R territory at that price point. Even if the owner was meticulous with storage and care, it's 8 years old. It probably needs an oil change, would definitely have the suspension serviced, the brake/clutch fluid changed and coolant swapped. Hell, I'd probably drop new brake pads too. If the tires are more than 4 years old, throw them away. I would offer $13K and point out all these additional consumable/service items that it needs.

How long has it been for sale?

As you said yourself in your original post. He is ‘asking’ top dollar.

Offer him what you think it’s worth, nothing more.

The worst that could happen is that he says no. You can always go up from there if you want.

He is asking top dollar. The riding season is practically over, which means the bike will be another year older next spring. And the economy is slowing making people tighten their belts.

Make an offer that you’re comfortable with.

Let us know what happens…

Thanks to all of you for your great responses, I really appreciate it when people that know, take the time to make thoughtful comments.

I think $15,000 is too high, $13,000 is a bit low ball which is not my style to try and steal a bike, so I've decided to split the difference and offer $14,000 depending upon condition of the machine when I see it in person on Friday morning. I'll let you guys know how this all turns out including lots of pics of the bike, I'm hoping to trailer home a 1299!

Considering the final year for the 1299 was 2017, it probably has everything Ducati would have released on that bike. It may be a good decision to purchase if you have been wanting one. Good luck.

Agreed, 2017 is the one to have. Thoroughly enjoyed mine. electronics were good, it had a geometry closer to the 'R' model with 0.5 degrees less rake. Stability was phenomenal in corners and rewarded taking a late apex. Very torquey engine. 😀

I bought the '16 yesterday morning, will post up pics shortly, I ended up paying a bit too much for the bike but it is what I wanted, is beautiful and looks like a brand new machine, haven't seen one any cleaner on dealer showroom.

Congrats! Don't worry about if you got a good deal or not. The more you enjoy it. The better of a deal you got.
