899 Selling very well it appears..

I'd take that with a grain of salt: UK, December, and last but not least, don't forget Audi. They know how to play the numbers game; I wouldn't be surpised that the numbers would show that every last bike built was already sold.

Yep, statistical anomaly. New release of an anticipated model during a dead sales cycle. Sell two when the other guys sell one, and voila - you're shifting them at twice the rate of the next most popular model. Runaway hit!

Still looking forward to having a go on one when I get a chance. It'll be interesting to see how much if any you miss the 1199's kick in a street environment.

dealership near me has had the same one sitting on the floor since day 1. When was that, November??

Also taking into account the licensing requirements in the UK. I was shooting the .... with a motorcycle rider, from the UK, years ago. He gave me the breakdown (It was years ago) of how incredibly challenging it is to get a liter bike license and the insurance is completely insane. He detailed out the years and years of riding, on required engine sizes before they allow you to purchase a liter bike. He said you had to start small and ride it for a predetermined amount of time before you could test into a larger engine. When I told him I walked into a dealership, a decade ago, and bought a liter bike (GSXR) and had not ridden in a few years before it, he was astonished. And then worse when I told him we didn't have a specific time period or engines you have to ride first. You could literally take a riders course and go buy a 1000cc bike that same weekend, haha"¦

Some of the UK forum members can correct or confirm this ? I think its basically accurate.

So maybe the UK riders are looking at the 899 as an opportunity to own a Panigale without the licensing (899 vs 1199) requirements, and insane insurance premiums ?

Just a thought

Um, in your area November through now is the prime selling season for 2-wheel toys?

Your point is moot. Do you live in my "area?" No. You have no idea what you're talking about. Ducs, Bimmers, and Suzukis fly out of the dealership by me no matter what the weather, 10, 20, 30 or 90 degrees. Sun, snow, rain this dealership sells at least one bike a day no matter what. So, in rebuttal, yes November to now bikes still do sell. I simply made an observation that 'around me' the 899 hasn't even sold. Nice try at attacking me though, fail. :D

Again, in my opinion, it comes down to spending a couple more K's and you get 'twice' the bike. If you can afford $17,000 OTD for a bike, you can afford $20,000 for one.... unless you're a fan of less power I see no logic in purchasing an 899.

899- cheap(er) display, cheap(er) fixed suspension, cheap(er) rims & tires, tacky DSS (imo), cheap engine casing, cheaper brakes. Then, obviously its 3/4 the engine. Only about $3,000 less for this bike? NO THANKS.

Have you seen the 2014 Ducati Performance parts lineup? They've got magnesium engine components for sale for the 899. So, you lay out $15,000 for the bike, then blow $1,000 on parts to make it more an 1199. Who in their right mind would do that?? Then, if you want a seat cowl instead of the passenger seat, theres another $250. By the time you change two more things on this bike you've spent 1199 money.... WHY???

Calm down, Francis.

The 899 will outsell the 1199 in the U.S. this year, by a huge margin. The 1199 is an awesome bike, the pinnacle of technology and performance in the Ducati lineup. However, not everyone wants that. And virtually none of the 899 buyers will be comparing it to the 1199 to make a purchase decision between the two. It's only 1199 owners who are comparing their bike to the 899, as far as the market is concerned they are two different segments with different buyers.

I think you're right. I think the 899 will surprise everyone and be one of their more successful platforms they've had in recent years.
If it had been available last Feb when I bought my 1199, I would have given serious consideration to taking home the 899 instead.
Unlike other naysayers around here, I think it's a great bike that doesn't need any sort of justification by anyone in choosing it over an 1199.
I remember all the yammering from the 916 crowd when I bought my 748 back in '97. It sounds exactly like what I'm hearing from 1199 owners - ignorant prattle from the "bigger is better" crowd.
I can't justify bringing one home with an 1199 already in the garage (actually I could but my wife would probably shoot me dead for it) but I want to test ride one bad. I think it would be fun.

Due to some "issues" with my bike I am picking up a loaner 899 on Thursday and will be keeping it for a few days..... Going to be interesting to compare these bikes...

The mv 800 is a superb motor. The f3 a great bike. MV still hasn't gotten the little niggling issues sorted. They're on around map 55 or so now. they've had a long term shift indicator bug which has now just recently been fixed. BUT, MV is coming up with some interesting new bikes (IMHO the new rivale out hypermotards the 821 hypermotard) and the 800 sport tourer another cool idea. Lots of interesting stuff from a tiny company like MV.

2014 Ducati 899 Panigale Comparison - Motorcycle USA

Looks like MV f3 800 has the 899's number. Game, Set , Match . STEP YOUR GAME UP DUCATI. There is no reason the F3 should be lighter and more powerful .

Whilst I don't disagree with your logic, there is one very import factor that you've over looked.
The psychological barrier of riding a 1 litre superbike. Many people who buy smaller bikes are "afraid" to throw a leg over more powerful litre bikes.
So even though, relative to the 1199, the 899 may not seem like such good value, there will be a fairly large group of people who will buy a 899 over a 1199 any day of the week.

Also.. to a much lesser extent. Depending on your area, the running costs associated with owning a litre bike may be significantly higher. ie insurance.
