Do the math

My 0.02

What's your "number"? The dollar amount, you'd be willing to pay for a used R? That's the key.

Also, what price difference between the new and used R would make you feel like you got a sweet deal? (Instead of $1500, is it $2500, $4000, etc.?)

Figure out those answers (with our input if it sits right with you), then do the following:

Consider making a list of what you want with the R...e.g., have them include the 600 mile service, repair that scratch, throw in a new set of tires, include the warranty, etc. Essentially, formulate the sweetest deal you can imagine.

Once youve decided what price you'd be willing to pay for the either R, propose an amount (with unspoken wiggle room on that $ amount) to the dealer. Maybe start with the used R, since that price might be more negotiable (or whichever you want more).

If they can't achieve the price OR the price difference you want on the used R, then you know your answer.

Hope this helps. :)

Heavy wheels, no ohlins.

It's standard one size fits all Ohlins so it's not a better actual track set up. You still need the correct springs etc
The light wheels are a help but not exactly a necessity on something that's already quite light and flighty
Not bagging on the S - if anything it makes more sense as a nice fancy road bike. You'd be better off buying a base for just track use and adding properly set up stuff

For the question at hand - it doesn't sound like a great idea for a saving of 1500!

i would get the Texas R for 4k off. good deal. press bikes are broken in, all is checked, etc.
as mentioned, hammered for all their life. the mechanics took care that they are hot before they went out. so you got the best brake in for the bike.

won't help you much to know, that a dealer gets these cheaper. if they don't sell it to you they will sell it to someone else.

if it's #2 it might have been dovi's bike, if nicky got #1 ;)

1500 more or less, heck, who knows, maybe you scratch the tank next week and then? losing virginity hurts ;) take it and buff it out!
i tipped mine over after 2 weeks, in my own garage!!! hell, i woke the whole neighborhood up cursing!

yep, come on, you don't buy an R every day , now do you... to me the 1500 could not in any way replace the joy of knowing that every mile is your mile. You brake it in, you heat it up properly before you rev it... ITS ALL YOURS! that my friend cannot be paid for with 1500 ... :) for 90 % sure : they dynoed it not much longer then 200 miles...

Yes and no. Gunny was using 23k which is another 3k down from where the OP was discussing from. The "value" statement went from 26 to 27.5 (and I question that as well ) but from 23k to 27.5 or 30. Do you think 23k on a 450 mile 30k demo bike is good value ? I certainly do

Of course, I was just basing my statement on he could get a new one for 2500 off, this one for 4000 off. Those are his only known options.

Nicky got #69....duh! Hehehe:p

...., I wish I could remember what number mine was! I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of 'em. Actually, I'd prefer a press bike over a stock one. Reason? If Ducati is like most other manufacturers, they make damn sure that the press fleet bikes are PERFECT out of the factory, if not ringers (maybe some even have a few special parts?).

Also, 450 track miles is nothing. Those bikes were driven hard, but they also had some of Ducatis best mechanics caring for them. And who knows, might have even been Spies or Hayden's bike.....

I think this motor needs to be run in correctly . I would not be happy with a bike run in on the dyno as heat cycles and bedding in rings are essential with these motors .
Everyone has different opinions on this but I think a decent 1000 k/600 mile run in on the road with a few heat cycles is going to give this motor a longer life span .

Were the tires replaced with new ones on the press bike Rs? Or does it come with 450 miles of track on them?

See - differences in opinion over how a bike should be broken in. If you think it should be adhered to recommendations then this wouldn't be a deal. If you think it should be hammered then 450 miles mean nothing.

He is only talking about a 1500 difference between this bike and a new one. When spending 30K for a bikle, to have a brand new one that I know what it's been throuigh, and no scratches, I'd spend the 1500 - I think you all would as well.

Agree. 1500 is nothing on a $30,000 bike.

Stock for stock the S is a superior track bike. Sorry that's just the facts. Modding the crap out of a base is a great option but murders resale.
