Was working in my garage hanging hooks with a cordless drill. I turned around too close to my covered bike and drove the screwdriver bit into what turned out to be the tank. Thank God it did not go all the way thru but as you can see took out a chip deep enough to show bare aluminum.

I think someone posted a link for touch up paint once in the past but couldn't find it. Has anyone had something similar happen to them and what did you do for a fix - short of buying a brand new glossy carbon tank? :D

Its a solution, just consider your unfortunate moment the beginning of a new mod (misfortune = opportunity) :D

 As if there isnt enough pain and suffering in the world already... now this!
you know what you gotta do.. driain it, wrap it, pack it, then ship to Sean and make it new again.

time for a carbon tank now!! Perhaps it wasn't entirely an accident gunny :D

Plus with a discount the cf tank won't be expensive at all!

Seriously that is heartbraking!

Gunny, I told you what happens with the carbon tanks:D.

Sell your tank on Ebay, you should get $ 1800 for it as is. Guy's that race the 1199 will buy it, they don't care about the chip in the paint, then buy my tank for $ 2600 that comes with a carbon fiber gas cap and a carbon fiber tank guard and you be all set and save yourself lot's of hassles.

Ask your painter how much he will charge you to strip the paint, then sand the super rough aluminum smooth and then clearcoat it. Sit down when he tell you, I bet you your next phone call will be to me.:D:D

Here the link to it: Shift-Tech Carbon - DUCATI 1199 PANIGALE SHIFT-TECH-CARBON ALUMINUM GAS TANK

wow, I feel for you Gunny. ouch, I would cry........... , that would piss me off so much. Accidents do happen though. But like the others have said, I think stripping it down to aluminum would be awesome. and that small mark no one will notice. Save the money in my opinion. However, Colorrite is great at color matching motorcycles, it's their business. .....why dont companies sell their paint ???

if you want to save money and try it yourself its not really that bad if you have a steady hand to do the grain. strip the paint chem or sand blast, take an orbital sander with a foam pad about a inch thick between the sander and paper (because the tank has so many curves) use around 220 grit you just want to even the surface out. then go one more time doing a figure 8 pattern clean with acetone in between when your done it should look like metal flake paint (sparkles) and an even color all over. then just take some red scotch bright your gonna want to use a pce of foam again and start putting the grain in nice even long strokes you will see if you stop you need to go from one end to the other. you can tape off the section you are doing then just let then over lap alittle.

remember aluminum is soft so just be easy with the sanding. if you slip with the grain its not a big deal most of the time just do a couple more passes with the scotch bright should fix it up.

if its dented when you strip it your gonna need to fill it weld it will look like ass but it will come right out when your refinish it and it will be completely invisible.

that pic is stainless steal much harder then aluminum we did #4 frames and header the doors are about #6-7 and the stripes are #8 (mirror but you can see a touch of grain)
