The automotive paint chip repair services can do a spot repair very well. I had a car that had aluminum body panels, and had a chip repaired perfectly on the quarter panel - 1000% matched with the pen gun and clear coat!

Just have someone do the paint repair and keep the tank.....or......sell it and get the CF tank.

I have had numerous inqueries regarding stripping ther AL tank and putting grain into it and then CC'ing it. I turn those jobs down. Over time the clear will delaminate. Ever notice the problems Ducati has over the factory 1098 "metalized" decals? Bingo. Other painters will do this, but as a business decision I will not.

This same delamination will likely occurr to all factory Duc tanks with the CC over the bare AL tank on the red / white / blac / AL tanks.,......just a matter of time.

Every painter has their own reasons / theories....etc. From my 30+ years of painting bikes full time I have not come across a sprayable clear coat specifically made to go over a bare metal substrate.

I am not saying I can not do this. I am saying that personally I will not do this. Paint sticks by mechanical adhesion (sanding) and chemical adhesion (self explanitory) Using CC over bare AL only affords you one of the two.

The only "safe" (relitively speaking) way to put CC over bare AL is powdercoat, like the Triumph frames of a few years back. Of course it will have a rather unsightly textured "orange peel" to it....

what is average length of time that CC retains adhesion over AL in YOUR experience? thx!

A lot of factors.....too many to give an average time actually.

Was acrylic clear used?

Polyurethane?

What UV protection level does the CC have? <<<<<that really matters as quite a bit of paint damage can happen by sunlight bouncing off of the AL and beaming back out to the ether through the CC.,.,,,,

Ever see a Candy color fade in the sunlight? That has more to do with what type of CC was used as opposed to the time in the sun. Candy's fade over silver bases the fastest....the UV killz em quicker, once with the rays going into the paint job, and then again reflecting back out through the CC

Same with AL parts that have been CC'd

Also another factor is prep.....

Where is the bike stored?

The list goes on.....

Again I am not saying you can not do this, or have this done..... but from a business POV....

tick, tick, tick....

So for me not worth it.

....doin an 848 now.....and a CF Panigale..... werkin' like a crack whore now.....LOL

Pics soon.

LOL, just painted the frame of my ST2.1 1970 disco ball Candy Tangerine. It's so fugly it rounded the bend and actually looks kewl in a bizarre way....gonna be one of those "love it ot hate it" paint jobs.....we'll see.

Was working in my garage hanging hooks with a cordless drill. I turned around too close to my covered bike and drove the screwdriver bit into what turned out to be the tank. Thank God it did not go all the way thru but as you can see took out a chip deep enough to show bare aluminum.

I think someone posted a link for touch up paint once in the past but couldn't find it. Has anyone had something similar happen to them and what did you do for a fix - short of buying a brand new glossy carbon tank? :D

gunny my friend is a auto guy and he did the gloss on all my dp parts as you know. you are just like me and unless its perfect you will not be satisfied with it. I see 3 choices and you know what you are going to do anyway but here is what i see.

1 ship to sean and have it done correctly. you will not take a half ass job. touch up wont work you need it filled in, primed, and painted and the paint has to match the bike.

2 make the tank aluminum looks so good in the pics.

3 get guido's tank and sell yours.

there is no way on earth you will do a touch up job and be satisfied with that. it will eat away at you till you do one of the other 3 choices anyway so just save the trouble

^^^ This

You are very much a show type of bike right now and a quick fix will take away from that pride you have put so much time and effort into on your beautiful machine.

Carbon Fiber would be nice, but with all the issues people have with the Eth in the fuel and the expansion I cannot see it being a smart option.

The aluminum tank that Guido has is beautiful and would fit nicely, but I feel it does need a little bit of red in it.

Color it in with red sharpie. Nobody will notice unless you tell them it is there. :)

It would drive me nuts too, but I'd prob do this in the interim.

I dropped a 2x4 on my tank and it put a 1in crease on the tank. I finally installed the TechSpec grips on it and you don't see it. It drove me nuts too so I know the feeling!

another fun thing clear powder coating is the ass that doesnt where gloves after the final cleaning then you have their finger prints in it. it can look spotless but the heat brings every thing out even imperfections in the metal.
anodizing clear doesnt come out bad but it fades so quick. eastwood makes a diamond coat clear for bare metal never tried it. we use lacquer but it all indoors and i would nvr but that .... on anything i had to touch or clean but company's with money love spending $$$ every year to have it redone.

i have heard of a people trying clear coat over anodizing but havent heard how long it lasted or even how it came out.

We have purchased back in 2009 the Ducati Performance Aluminum tank for our 1098R, it came with a very thin and soft clear coat on it so we had the tank clear coated again just to make sure it's done right.

The bike sold in Feb. of 2013 and the clear coat on the aluminum tank was like the day it was applied, the tank was in perfect condition just as it should be.

As far as I know, the 1198SP has an aluminum tank also and has some section of it showing the aluminum through the clear coat and it's doing just fine.
