Any clever ways to lock your helmet to your bike?

Occasionally, I need to leave my helmet with my bike. The Panigale of course has no built in lock. Anyone have a favorite way to do it? I don't need a real thief-proof system, just something to deter opportunists. Ideally, it would stow away under the seat.

Thinking of using a pistol padlock, but would love to hear what you all use.

EDIT: Tried the pistol padlock and the results rock! I was wondering what I was going to strap the helmet to, having forgotten that we have hollow triple clamps. Best parts: (1) Can't steal by cutting the strap (2) Fits under the seat (3) rubberized strap won't scratch the bike (4) incredibly cheap

That's a GREAT idea especially on a nice 80 degree day after riding around!! OH that awesome heat shield won't melt any of the helmet pieces! no just burn the inside padding!!

I haven't been in a situation where I need to leave my nicer helmet behind but if I had to lock up the passenger helmet or my secondary/night helmet and cannot take it with me, I use a simple cable and padlock and set the helmet on the ground. But I plan to purchase this solution (above). Like I said, I take my helmet with but for those rare occasions when you cannot, this solution sounds like a good idea to me.
 
Someone gave me a Gun cable lock. I haven't been in a situation to have to need it on the Pani, but it does wrap through the helmet's D-ring and loop the top triple tree. I did use it on the 1098 and wrap the cable around the passenger peg mount.
 
Having had a helmet stolen off a bike at a private sports ground, I now never leave a hat with the bike. What was gauling was the fact that they cut the strap to take the helmet!

How quickly do you think bolt cutters can cut that cable lock and your jacket and helmet are stolen? One second? Two seconds? I never totally depend on cables and locks in lieu of common sense and taking extra precautions so I realise you're not going to stop all criminals but I ask because I wonder if those cables that claim to be reinforced or heavy duty or hardened or armour are really worth the extra difference?
 
c'mon guy, nothing is total protection from theft. The cable I'm speaking of is 3/8" hardened steel with a vinyl coating. sure you can cut them with the BIG bolt cutters, certainly not bolt cutters you can carry in your pocket.

But me, I'll take the risk, much rather do that the lug around a helmet and leather jacket in 100 degree weather. THE ONLY THEFTPROOF way is to carry it with you. Think the odds are far in my favor that a guy is not going to walk up with two foot bolt cutters in the middle of the day and cut the cable, just nuts to think otherwise.

I am with you Marc. I left a helmet on a trailbike while I was with the dealer inside back in the early 70's. I came out and some f wit had cut the strap and left the two D rings locked into the helmet lock on my Honda XL175K1.

Have never left a helmet on a bike since.
 
When I do wanna leave my helmet with the bike, I simply padlock the metal ring for the chin strap of the helmet to the heal guard behind the pegs.

Don't do it very often becauase I have heard of people getting their helmets cut off.
 
Short self-coiling cable lock with integral combo. Put the helmet cover on to avoid attracting too much attention, and hang the helmet (by the chin piece) off the passenger peg (opposite the side of the sun if it is hot outside). Did it all year at school, never had a problem. When putting the cable thru the frame member near the exhaust be careful not to burn your fingers, or melt the plastic cable sheathing on the pipe.
 
Uploaded a picture of my old pistol lock in use (See original post). It's like the lock was designed for the bike!
 
Master makes a cheap helmet cable lock that I just put through the rear set and the d-rings and then hang the helmet on the peg. It is small enough that it stows easily in the cavity under the tail. That being said, I do take my helmet most everywhere with me since it is only a minor deterrent, but carrying a helmet is a pain when you are just running in for Chipotle or something and need a free hand to pay and carry your burrito. :)
