Anyone have experience with the GPS lap timer yet?

I ordered one and my local dealer doesn't have any experience with it. Anyone have a link or advice? I can't believe I'm the only one in Austin that tracks their 1199.

Is it the same as the DDA fitted to standard bikes?

Several of the folks I race with here in Albuquerque use GPS devices to track lap times, brake markers, etc. and love them. These aren't the Ducati unit, so I'm interested in your thoughts about the system once you've used it and gotten familiar with it's functions.

In not carrying a mobile phone on the track. I want something I can easily refer to while on the track for small incremental improvements as well as data logging for when I get home. The ducati unit is ridiculously pricy but it offers oem fit and all the features I want (more memory would be nice though).

I'm going this Sunday to Cressen which is a 1.3 mile track so I will have lots of laps to practice with it. The following Saturday I go to MSR Houston so by then I should be totally used to it.

So I think you are referring to the DDA lap timer with GPS that I fitted to my 1199S.

I have only tracked it once but it was fairly effective. Once or twice it failed to record the end of lap so I had two laps rolled into one.

The other thing to look out for is that it doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between sessions - something I'm sure there must be a fix for but there is no manual online that I have ever been able to find.

I'm going to follow up on Frosty's suggestion and see if I can find instructions in the R manual.

The software for analysing the data is not great, the translation of data to the map doesn't zoom in enough for me, would have been great to get a better idea of lines but I guess GPS isn't that accurate.

If you find a manual let me know.

OK so I found the R manual and its explanation of DDA and Lap timer function.

However the one bugging thing for me was that I couldn't work out how to save different sessions separately i.e. I could only see laps 1-30 and then it would start to overwrite the early laps.

I would be grateful if anyone could tell me how I could have a separate data file for each session. Can I do this by turning DDA off between sessions so at least I get a different file that can be analysed after on the PC?

That would be really useful. I plan on using mine for line adjustments and braking point tweaks so as is it fits the bill but for $600 it should really have more functionality.

i did a whole day, 7 sessions, with 8ish laps each session, track lenght about 5.3km, used about 10% of avaliable memory.
also it automatically turns off when bike is turned off and needs to be turned on before each recording session

I actually found it didn't need to be turned on again. I ran 7 sessions, 6-7 laps each, and I didn't touch it again except to look at the laps on the dash, then turned the bike off. When I started the bike again for the next session it automatically remembered the start/finish line and started recording again. U fortunately though it can't distinguish between sessions and over-writes after 30 laps.

take your pc, download the DDA date and clear the memeory.. :)

Not such a silly idea if I could get a small device that could read a USB but carrying my laptop to track day would be a serious pain! It would have been so easy for them to just have built in an automatic session identifier based on the fact that the bike being turned off, starting a new file.

Agreed. I'm not lugging a laptop around just yet. I already have too much stuff as is.
