I did read the "bike to bike comms" thread and didn't really see what I was looking for.
Has anyone used the Chatterbox X1 Slim for bike-to-bike communication in a mountainous region? If so, what type of practical distance of reliable communication are you getting?
I am going on a mountain trip with my in-law soon. He rides a fully-dressed bagger, and I'll be on the Pani. I've never gone to the Smoky Mountains and not burned up 2 sets of knee pucks in any trip longer than 3 days. So I want to take off and enjoy the better twisty parts but be able to call my in-law to check on him while waiting at the next checkpoint, instead of turning around to physically meet him and gather him up.
So I'm looking for the best performing communicator for bike-to-bike comms. It appears all the Bluetooths are line-of-sight, meaning they are useless in a mountainous environment with tons of switchbacks and trees blocking line-of-sight, so the GMRS or CDMA options are what's best for my situation. I probably wouldn't go more than a couple miles ahead of my in-law, and even if I did I would pull over to wait for him but I want to be able to raise him on the communicator when he's still out of sight.
Thanks in advance for your recommendations and reviews of equipment you have used in similar situations.
