Did considerable research on the various products and landed on this one, just ordered it.

I currently use a chatterbox xbi2 and love it. The only thing I don't like about this one is the microphone mount. I would prefer one that gets placed inside the helmet via a cable or wire. Not a big fan of the boom style mic. Other than that it looks real nice.

My Personal Sena Review After Purchase

So I installed the Sena in my helmet yesterday and must say had a tough time doing that correctly. Once on I synced it up to my cell phone which went smooth enough, desoute the manual saying you can BT it using Headset or Hands Free - I never saw these choices at all.
Tried it out in my living room with both making a call and listening to music via BT on Android phone. Both of these worked ok and were clear. Also hooked it to Ipod using the included wire and it also sounded pretty decent there too. Now the true test!

Went outside and got it all synced up and told my wife to call me on it. While driving I clearly heard the incoming call beep and pushed the take call button on the back. At low speed she said she could hear me fine and couldnt even hear the sound of pipes or engine AT ALL which i thought was wild. As I picked up speeds I began to have a hard time hearing her unless she spoke up loud- and even at 70 he said she couldn't even tell I was on a bike, hearing no engine, wind, or exhaust sounds. Thumbs up there!

After the call I went into music mode and must say I had a difficult time hearing the music even when both cell and Sena were cranked all the way up. Def not great quality stereo sound at all which pissed me off. I also tried using the cellular GPS function which is an audible turn by turn voice system which totally faded out under engine and exhaust noise. Very disappointing.

Went back home and took Sena advice by adding the velcro pads to the back of the speakers to get them closer to my ear itself. They are almost out so far they irritate my ears. Went out for another ride and did not find this mod to be much help whatsoever. I am not impressed and wish there was a way to get more wattage in this system so music and voices can be heard louder and not drowned out by wind and bike noise. I hope they let me return this thing for at least a merchandise credit of some sort, even though the sales rep said they cant do that with electronic items. WTF over?
I didnt even hook up the other unit to my wifes helmet to try the intercom system, which was a primary idea when I bought this. Now I wonder if any other system has more volume to make this worth a swap of any sort.?

Needless to say I am not happy even though every review of this Sena SMH10 is off the charts. Yes it is easy to use with the jog wheel, I even changed tracks on the music with very simple touch/twist. But the volume is the main issue for me. Maybe I did end up losing some hearing between all the artillery, mortars, ied's and bombs over the course of my lifetime. Oh well. There is my reviews folks. Thanks for all your input and assistance!

Hey Gunny the reason I went with the Sena is because they are the only company who makes a base with a plug for custom ear plugs. I had a pair of custom plugs made for external noise reduction and high quality sound. You need to purchase the new base but I thinks its only $40. Most all stock communication speakers are crap because of the space they have to work with. The custom plugs fit flush with your ear and also reduce a lot of wind noise which is great on long trips. You can still hear the exhaust :D

So with this device you can hear EVERYTHING better and still use the intercom, etc when you have earbuds in? Is there anything that you cant do with the system when using earbuds instead of the speakers? Do the speakers get shut off when you plug the buds in, or do they work in conjunction with them?
THANKS!

You loose the stock speakers all together - the new base just has the port for custom buds. Other than that the system works exactly the same. Basically just changing the speakers you use. You also dont have to run all of the speaker wiring in the helmet.

What tstephenson said ^^^^

You want the Sena clamp with a 3.5mm jack and a set of custom make earphones like these.

Had these made by a man who was at the NEC motorcycle show last year. He also made me a set that are just ear plugs which I use on track. They weren't cheap, £150/$225 for both pairs, but they're in a different league to helmet speakers, which are a compromise at best. To get them made you have to go along to the manufacturer as they squirt silicon in your ears to get the custom fit - a very strange sensation! They also don't stick out of your ears like ear buds and so they won't get pulled out when you take your helmet off.

The speakers in these are made by McKay and are great quality, not quite on a par with my bose headset, but not far behind. You can listen to music at any speed and they protect your hearing at the same time. I use mine on long haul flights too.

Yeah I had a pair like this made when I was doing competition shooting but they obviously didn't have the speakers inside them. But either way these have to be plugged into the sena base to work right?

Yes, they plug into the jack you can see lower right on the picture of the Sena clamp.

You'll need to buy either of these two optional Sena helmet clamps

Sena SMH10 A0303 Helmet Clamp

or

Sena SHM10 A0304 Helmet Clamp

I have the A0304, its more flexible and I prefer the stick-on mike in a fullface helmet. Using this I can get the mike up inside the helmet above the chin curtain and away from wind and engine noise. Not that its easy to esacpe the engine noise on a Pani ;-)

Bike comms

This may be considered a THREAD HIJACK but this is the closest related thread I could find other than the music one.

I understand communications regulations vary generally by country mostly related to radiated or output power (effectively, range) and frequency (channel) usage. I think we're fairly lax in the states with some systems extending range capabilities out to nearly 10 miles.

Circa 1996 I had a Chatterbox and liked it but in a crash it was scraped off and never replaced.

Now, I'm thinking about bike comms again. The technologies have evolved quite substantially in the ensuing years and so I begin my research with this august crowd.

So, if you use a bike-to-bike or helmet-to-helmet communications system when you ride what system do you use and why? And, knowing now what you do about the system you have, would you still buy it if you had to replace it?

:D
