Any recommendations? I am a bit confused with all the battery tender/chargers out there. Do I need a specific tender/charger for a lithium battery (I think that's what the 959 has)?

959 does not come with a lithium battery as stock. It’s possible, if your bike had a prior owner, that it was changed to a lithium.

I have used both Deltran Battery Tender and CTEK without issue.

If you have a stock battery now but may upgrade to a lithium one day, best to get a charger that can differentiate between the two. CTEK Powersport charger works for both. I use that currently. Deltran may have one that works for both as well, I can’t recall offhand.

If you have a Lithium battery then I suggest buy a decent Lithium charger that can supply about 5 amps.

Lithium chargers supply a higher voltage than lead-acid so you do need a charger that specifically caters for Lithium, otherwise it will not receive a full charge. I understand lead-acid chargers can only charge a Lithium battery to a voltage that is at the lower end of it's operating range. Enough to start, maybe, and then you rely on your alternator to top it up to a full charge.

And while the typical 800 mA chargers are fine for maintaining a Lithium battery, similar to lead-acid in that respect, when a Lithium battery drops below a certain threshold voltage (can't remember, is it 10.5v?) it requires the higher current to resurrect it.

You could even argue that an 800mA battery maintainer is a waste of money because Lithium batteries hold their full charge for months, much better than lead acid, so don't really need to be charged even if you store the bike over winter. So I'm told, I keep mine on a charger for peace of mind and ride all year.

As an example, I bought a CTEK Lithium XS (after I brought my battery to it's knees during an afternoon playing with my TFT screen and all the electronic whiz-bangery). The Ducati-supplied charger was unable to revive it over 24 hours but the CTEK had it operable after 40 minutes.

I bought CTEK after reading everything I could and determined it to be a capable unit. But have heard reports of them failing. I wanted Optimate but couldn't get one quickly at the time. I don't like that CTEK uses it's own unique connectors. Optimate uses the fairly standard SAE plugs.

Agreed on everything you covered--the Amps on the battery tender/charger (lead acid or lithium) makes 100% of the difference.

What kind of Lithium battery did you end up getting? I am still on stock Lead Acid.

My V4S came with a Skyrich Lithium, one of these...

I'm not an expert on batteries although have some limited (ancient) electronics understanding. I had to learn quickly when my battery died and people on this forum provided advice, mostly their choices, on chargers. So there are some discussions available via the Search function if you need it.

Wow. They went Chinese for OEM. I figured they would stick EU manufacturers, but hey--isn't every motorcycle made in Thailand now? I think I'd opt in for one of the US or EU brands for my upgrade.
