So after selling off a custom harley to make room for the 1299, I'm throwing around the idea of building a cafe racer/brat bike. I wanted a bike like this prior to getting the 1299, but pops talked me out of it. He'd say things like, "I wouldn't be caught dead on anything that f*ck*ng ugly." Also, stuff to the likes of, "it's just a fad."

After realizing the 1299 is likely only spending time on the track, not the street, and the fact that I'm ocd regarding bikes...I am debating building or buying a built one.

For those of you that know anything about these style bikes, what are your thoughts? I.E. do not spend over a certain amt, go CB750 or BMW R60/R, but one already built, etc.

It's a different style that won't tempt me on the street and that I also won't care about too much...so it does have a place in the garage in one sense or another. ..

Thanks in advance!

A few more...Clearly you can see a vast range from $5,000-$20,000 bikes.

These are a few...

Here is my CB750F.

998 swing and rear suspension, RSV fork, 999 brakes, 848 Evo wheels, home made rear frame, home made Diavel copy license plate holder. That little rear fairing is also home made. I copied gastank, made smaller mold and made it from glassfibre.

And now building BMW K100RS into less ugly. Project is called "Butt-ugly duckling". This shows a preview from it's future look:

Everything has been be done by me except painting.

I used to build up race bikes, now these old bikes. I don't really like riding them when they're done, I like powerful sportbikes. But building is a nice hobby, contradictory to my work in a suit and negotiating rooms.

Oh Jesus I guess if you get to a certain age.... :D

Nice bikes Raaseri! I agree with you, that the fun is likely in the build and not the ride. That's why I am throwing around the idea of something from Classified Moto (they incorporate r6 forks etc.). Only problem is, it's still not going to ride like a sportbike and I'm paying a premium. I want to build a bike, but I don't have the time. I could buy something that needs a little love and go from there I suppose... Or just ride the hell out of my Pani!

Here is my other bike. It's a Suzuki Savage with a RYCA CS-1 conversion kit. It took about 5 weekends to build and cost about $5k total. RYCA's Sportster kit would be my next build if that's what I was going for.

Nevermind, I can't attach a pic for some reason. Here is the website: rycamotors.com . Mine is one of the customer builds.

The whole bike-scene is a .... enlargement for egoists like you and me. Let me tell you, that when I ride 1299s in Helsinki full Dainese leather anf fullface helmet, about 2% of the chicks show some interest. But with CB, open face helmet plus sunglasses, t-shirt etc about 80% of the chicks show similar interest...

There are other aspects than how they ride.

My ego is telling me to build something I can call my own and enjoy...meanwhile my brain is laughing at my ego. Projects never go as planned.

Seen this when on holiday, really love this thing:

Hey Indiana

I don't really understand your question:
If you have money (at least 10000 USD), buy yourself a cafe racer and enjoy the hipster life :)
For 20000 USD you'll get a hyper-cool W800.

If you have time and mechanical skills, take an old bike and pimp it. There are a lot of cheap part sellers wolrd wide, just take your time to google for them...

If you have neither time nor money, don't do anything

@Raaseri: I do fully agree with you!
The only thing more crazy than me driving such a bike thru the city of Zurich is when me girlfriend is doing this. Every stupid guy immediately gets horny :(

Don't build more bikes that can fall over in your dad's garage before you have water boarded him to find out what has happened to your Pani. Make a decision once the truth is known. The truth will set you both free.

Hahaha...I was debating water boarding him today. I told a buddy of mine the story and said the only way to find out what really happened is to water board him! All thanks you of course!

Thanks Indy from your comments. If you decide to build, a word of advice. Take a real good test drive before you buy. If the looks is crappy, it doesn't matter since painting is quite cheap and you're gonna change a lot of those visible parts anyway.

But if there is anything wrong with the motor, it is gonna be four figures wasted money. At least in here bikes with problems are only 200-500€ cheaper than those having a working engine. It really is worth paying more.

Agreed...I'll pay a little more for a strong one, I don't mind if she's a little ugly. Believe me, I'm no stranger to the ugly ones...some might even venture to say I prefer them that way!!

Maybe? Still a Ducati.....
