Question to the fellow expert Ducati owners.

I am considering purchasing an 2014 - 1199R from a private party (original owner) with 5,000 miles on it.

My question(s) are the following:

-Would you (or have you) purchase a used bike from a private party?
-What are the max miles that would make it a no-go

My concern is I don't know how the bike has been broken in and don't want to have problems later - especially since I can not purchase an extended warranty.

Thanks guys..

Buying used is always a gamble unless you know the owner personally. Mileage doesn't matter much because you have no clue how those 5000 miles were put on the bike. Even if it was only 500 miles, you still have no idea.

That said, if you're really set on buying from a private seller, you better be getting a steal of a deal so that if there are any issues shortly after the purchase, you can pay the bills and still be in a decent overall price range as far as out of pocket goes. You can have a shop inspect the bike but there's not too much they'll be able to discover besides what's on the surface. Hell, it may be a perfect bike in the perfect condition but you'll never know for sure. Nothing can guarantee you of a problem free future. That's the risk you take when buying a used and more importantly out of warranty bike.

If you trust the seller and think it has been in good hands, bike has service records and price is ok, why not?

Ironically my experience with owning both the S and R versions is that you are better off if the R has been used pretty hard 'race bike' style since it takes a while for everything to seal up and stop burning oil. Mine didn't stop using oil until well over 1000 miles and probably five hard days on track and that was after doing 600 miles on the road to run in. I know that most R and Superleggeras have the same characteristics with many never really stopping burning oil since they never get used hard enough to really break the engine in.

My S never burnt any oil right from new.

I bought my tri from a "reputable" ducati dealer here in Washington on consignment from the original owner. billed as immaculate. the first 6 months of ownership were an absolute nightmare....in short, it really makes no difference if its dealership used or private seller used, its a gamble either way.

go with your gut feeling

owner could have had a nightmare which is fixed now.

bike could have been without problems and it starts now.

pretty hard to predict.

if the owner is passionate and the thing is clean, why not?

Also happens from new, its no different to a car purchase.

It will always be cheaper to buy secondhand as the original owner took the devalued hit.

My 1199S brand new was 36K plus on road tax, I picked it up 3 years later for 18.8K plus on road tax its only got 5K kms on it (genuine hasn't had dash replaced)

break in hard is better then soft

5 is nothing and if its clean and tires not wasted, go for it.

Do a good interview first for possible issues, my S with that has been a great bike and I beat it like you are supposed to.

For what it's worth, I've bought 2 R's that were pre-owned. Both from dealers. First one was a '13 and the second was a '15. Both were awesome bikes that i had zero issues with. I ended up selling both to other private parties, who are on this forum and have been enjoying the bikes.

Both my bikes still had factory warranty when i acquired them so that provided some piece of mind.

I've owned many motos over the years and about half I've purchased second hand. Given the depreciation we all see when we buy new I think the second hand market is such a great thing. It provides folks the means to enjoy and experience some amazing machines that they might not otherwise have a chance to new from the dealer.

I also try to keep my machines immaculate too always thinking about the next owner and try to offer fair prices (that are even a tad below market for a quick and easy sale). Seeing the next owner fall in love at first sight is an awesome thing and maybe that "good karma" gets passed back to me.

So in short if you're looking for a used bike, BUY FROM ME!! :p

I have a 1299 Panigale R Final Edition that has just 250 miles on the clock. Should be up for sale in no time :D

Let me know when you read;) but only if it comes with the gold wheels!

Yeah funny about wheels and the colour/color preferences we have. I myself think wheels should be plain black, that's why I had black OZ wheels on my 959 and looked for black forged wheels for my 1199.

Found some 1299s wheels and hid the red stripe on them, happy now.

I would think the risk of buying a used Ducati, especially these models, would be less than the average sportbike because their owners tend to be enthusiasts that have the means and knowledge to properly care for the bike. And, because many of them have the means and get bored easily, like KMY, provide excellent and exciting buys for enthusiasts (and would be enthusiasts) with less means (but smarter) for buying new. I'm too fussy (and kinda stupid) for buying used unless I'm forced to because the new ones are gone.
