Carbon Wheels Part 2...

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I am very happy to hear this. No one seemed to like them when I announced them upon us receiving them some time ago.

I would purchase them just to be different from the rest. Just that a friend of mine who has a base model Pani purchased BST's and now plans to sell his bike and wheels as he will be re-assigned overseas. He is selling me the BST's 50percent less than what he paid for brand new.

Was wondering if I should take the plunge as my stock Tri wheels are already very light. Should I?

Wish they were rotobox though instead of BST's. :)

BST's

Teamducatiracing- did you feel dramatic difference using the carbon fiber wheels versus the already light stock forged marchesini wheels on your 'S'?

I plan to purchase used BSTwheels from a friend for my Tricolore. Just want to know if replacing the already light forged stock marchesinis will make a difference? I would understand if I had the base model's heavy cast enkei wheels and went for carbons, then difference is worth the investment.

Please let me know....thanks.

Miguel

You wont see a difference Mig. I put them on my Tri last yr and weighed both stock wheels without tires and CF ones too. Its very minimal bro. Hope you are getting them for a steal as new ones are not that bad and costs can be worked on w numerous shops, including ours. If you find yourself into the Rotobox let me know and we can talk. Email is [email protected]

Happy you have the Tri also. Wait until you see all my mods soon to be photographed professionally here in Old Town Alexandria! Here is a shot of some Tri Rim Strips I discovered in Germany, my rear sprocket setup, and carbon swingarm guard.

Hey Gunny, those rim stripes look good! I'm currently using a PBR quick change sprocket carrier an a gold anodized aluminum SSR center cap. My rear sprocket is a size 42T though not a 41T as recommended.

So shifting to carbon wheels from my stock forged wheels is not much of a difference in terms of performance due to its already light weight forged oem wheels? Is it worth the investment? Though I'm getting it for a song, but then again will I really feel the difference? Need your honest opinion....will greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,
Miguel

Confused on the technical specs of the rotobox. The following is from their prospective website:

BST Wheels:
Black Mamba front 7 straight spokes 2.49 kg 5.48 lbs
Black Mamba rear 7 straight spokes 2.71 kg 5.97 lbs
All weights include wheel complete with hub, bearings, spacers and all MASS

total 11.45 Lbs

Rotobox:
Complete set of wheels, without brake rotors and sprocket, weights 6800g (15 lbs) to 7100g (15.5 lbs), depending on model of motorcycle.

Rotobox claims to be the lightest wheels but they claim 15 to 15 -1/2 lbs thats over 4.05 lbs heavier than the BST wheels? Is their website wrong? Are the wheels lighter but with the addition of the hubs, spacers, bearings makes it heavier than the BST?

The Rotobox looks sweet but I'm not sure how the cross winds will affect the wheels with those large flat spoke design. I had similar design wheels on my Trek time trial bike and the cross winds were horrid I ended up changing them out to spokes.

You'll perhaps notice a difference when cornering as any reduction in rotating mass will reduce the gyrosopic effect, making the wheel less resistant to a change in direction. How much of a reduction compared to say the forged wheels on an S model or an R, is probably subjective in all honesty. If you enjoy them and you like the look of them, in the end that is all that counts.

- OEM S/tri wheels:
Front: 3.14 kg / 6.9 lbs
Rear: 3.7 kg / 8.1 lbs

- BST:
Front: 2.693 kg /5.93 lbs (including the adaptation kit to work with the brakes)
Rear: 2.7 kg /5.95 lbs

Oz Mags are just .2lbs heavier than the BSTs

(Weights stolen from frinic from the 1199forums)

15 lbs for Stock and 12 lb for Carbon = 3lbs rotating weight savings (20%). Won't make a huge difference at street legal speeds, but the reduced weight should make as significant a difference in how the bike behaves on the track as the missing money does from your checking account.

Antihero- thanks!!!!! Now these are the figures I wanted to know.

Rotobox wheels are the lightest and strongest carbon wheels on the market period... Will post up a full review and more pictures soon...

P.S. My bike has never been to a Starbucks parking lot...

And a huge difference to your bank account. The cost of the wheels vs the payoff is not worth it. Your lap times aren't going to be 20% better.

Teamducatiracing- that's good to know, kindly give us a road test report on your rotobox wheels. Thanks!

By this logic, maybe we should just all buy R1s, as the 20% (+) cost difference between the R1 and the Panigale doesn't make our lap times 20% lower.

Why didn't you buy an SV650? If the money is the determining factor you'd definitely get more bang for your buck. Sheesh!

Rear 6.1 kg / 13.4 lbs

SV Power!

"Why didn't you buy an SV650? If the money is the determining factor you'd definitely get more bang for your buck. Sheesh!"

Nothing wrong with having an SV track bike man, right???????????
As you said, you DEFINETLY get more bang for the buck since they are simple as hell to maintain and add performance mods to as well. Mine pushed 81 rwhp on a dyno which is pretty good for simple mods. The bike is super light to throw around, tires are much cheaper, maintenance is simple, and you can even rig up your old 748R bodywork to fit them too!
(I get people doing double takes trying to figure it out-lol)

We can all go on and on, and on, and..........................about the CF wheels and their pros and cons like we all have here on this site, and many other Ducati sites too. If its in your own personal budget and what you like (in either gloss or matte finish) then run with it right?
The Rotobox wheels didnt give me a chubby when I first saw them either so I can include myself in the group who hosed me when I announced them way back. But have they kinda grown on me now, kinda - and apparently several others of you as well. :D

There is nothing Id like more than to own a set of Oz, Carbon, and some gold forged alum in another brand but that is not reality. Get what makes YOU happy and not the members of the forum right? Personally I like my BSTs but agree the style could be tweaked for something newer - perhaps like RB did or those unreal 10k CF wheels that were up on here a way back! BIG MONEY!

So, TeamRacingDude is going to do a new thread with some deeper reviews after he pushed those Rotobox wheels hard and take some new close up pics so we can all see the weave in CF and if there are any nicks found. Right "Team?"

Oh- since I started off with SV Power I guess I should throw a shot or two in.

This is odd. Ive never quoted one of my own posts before but didnt want to put up another thread for an SV on a Ducati site. Just came across this today and wanted to out it out in similar content. I found one of the sweetest deals on an SV that I've ever found on a WERA site and actually spoke w the owner just now, who ironically is an italian guy who owns a 1098 and is selling this setup to buy an HP4 for track since he wants something bigger. The guy rode this bike ONCE!!

Anyone in MD.VA.DC area seeking a sweet track bike, with more extras than you can imagine is encouraged to contact him asap since this won't last long at all. Myself and Flobrandx are riding up to see this tomrw since I'd even take a cash advance on my cc for this! Enough said.

I have been looking for a bike like that. It's a shame I'm not even close to that location :(
