Carbon Wheels

I love the Matte finish, better looking than glossy finish in my opinion. But to each his own, many will prefer glossy I'm sure. I think Ducati did a very original thing by making the factory CF parts Matte finish on the 1199. I cant recall another bike that came straight from the factory with Matte finish CF. Wait, maybe Aprilia did it with the tail section on the 2010 RSV4? Not sure.

yep aprilia did it on the rsv4
I wanna say guzzi did it too, but can't recall.

Do CF wheels have an alloy core which is coated, or are they CF through and through? What is the durability of CF compared to standard stock wheels? If there is minimal weight advantage and the cost delta is just for the look of it; does it justify any possible inherent weaknesses over the stock alloy forged wheels?

Depends on the brand. BST are the lightest and the strongest because their are monobloc and the CF is very high quality. They are 5 times stronger than forged alloy but....it you reach the limit their will break (but at the end if the shock is 5 times stronger than the force needed to destroy alloy...i could not imagine the result on the bike)

To give you an idea my BST are like brand new after 2 years of riding in "real world" (bumpy roads, city traffic....) and I got a friend who got them since 4 years, bring them regulary on track, use them on road and he has no issues at all.

The performance gain depends on the weight of the stock wheel as well as the bike stock behavior.

On my SFs, it was night and day, after fitting the BST it didn't feel like an 1X98 anymore. It was far more agile and performance wise it was a better upgrade than the termi full system. The handling was better but also the acceleration, braking....it was just another bike.

On the 1199. If you have a base the difference will be huge also as the stock wheels are quite heavy. On my S, the BST are still lighter but the performance gain is less noticeable. For sure it handles even better, but stock is already a weapon. Due to .... weather I couldn't test them in deep but I ll give you an update when it stops raining....

Also just a side note, the weight saving can look minimal but don't forget that less weight on wheels also benefit from gyroscopic effect so basically saving 2 lb on one wheel is more or less like saving 10 lb on the bike

Cost of BST Carbons

Anyone know the approx cost of a set of BST wheels that were brand new a month ago, and only been on bike a hundred miles or so?

I guess I need to add that they are of the "glossy" type finish now too! lol

Willing to change just because BST posted my bike before yours on FB? ;) (just teasing you)

huh?

Not sure I follow man? Nah, I was just curious since I do like the look of the gold Oz wheels alot and what mine would sell for. Seriously though, we posted ours on BST FB? Need to check it out!

The Dragon Lady with her set of BST Wheels. Where she used to turn in quickly she is now completely intuitive.

Hi i am from Dymag (now CSA Performance Wheels)

And to debunk the myth of whether or not we are alive and kicking we are very much alive!

We are building back up to where we used to be and offer carbon fiber wheels for most Ducati's including the 1199 Pani. The original company went bankrupt but we are going strong and building momentum towards two new wheel design launches latter this year and early next year, and we plan on re-entering racing next season too.

For all inquiry's please head over to www.dymag.com and use the links for the information you require.

Thanks! :)

Welcome back.

as a former BST owner, I can honestly say you can not go wrong with BST's and for the price , it is very hard to beat. Only downside is it looks kinda old already. But it delivers its promise, better handling, acceleration and reduced weight.

Now if you inherited some money or if you have recently stopped a bad habbit(cocaine, casino etc), there is no reason why you can not afford galespeed's carbon fiber rim for the 1199. the down side it costs 8900$, more than two times the cost of BST's and you can already buy a used 848 or a monster 1100 for that money

Not to stir up a shitstorm, but if you're looking to gain performance from dropping rotating mass, you might also want to consider OZ Cattiva and Cattiva R forged magnesium wheels. I believe the Cattiva R forged magnesium wheels are a fair bit lighter than BST CF wheels and what I'm saving pennies to buy for a track set. It's what almost all of SBK use (since BSTs are outlawed) plus, if you ever crash on your BSTs, the only way to know for sure they are still road-worthy is to send them back to South Africa and have them X-Ray'd. Even then, if they're destroyed you're out of luck.

Motowheels.com is the importer and they're actually about $100 less than the BST set. Links: 2012 Ducati 1199 Wheels at Motowheels.com, OZ Motorbike Cattiva Forged Magnesium Rear Wheel: Ducati

They don't list the wheel weights of the Panigale, but they do offer these up for comparison:

OZ wheel weights (lb) compared to OE and other manufacturers.

OE BMW S1000RR 9.75 16.00

I have Mags (Marchesini) and totally agree. They are only $2200 from OmniaRacing, and a safer (for some) alternative to Carbon Fiber. There was a huge discussion on the safety and legal merits of Carbon Fiber on another thread, and I think it comes down to some people just don't trust them, valid or not.

The Matte finish BST looks awesome...matches the DP carbon parts on my bike!

But I will just stick to my Forged marchesini wheels!

$2200 for Marchesini Forged Magnesium ..... is that for both wheels?
