Clutch Issues...Anyone?

This seems to be a frequent problem that hopefully will result in a recall from Ducati.

The "loss-of-clutch" nearly caught me out recently when doing a U-turn when the road turned to dirt. Mid way thru the turn, I went for a little bit more clutch, but there was none and ran wide into a ditch. Fortunately I kept the bike upright and found clutch on the second pump.

Bled the clutch that evening and all was well.

I wonder if Ducati would have accepted a warranty claim if I had dropped the bike in the dirt?

I agree. Seems odd that there is a lot of "bleeding the clutch" for a brand new Ducati and it should be designed to function correctly wether it's hot or not. All my other bikes were cable clutches so this is new to me.

I had this same problem again this week - second time. They clutch was feeling spongy and the bled it to remove the air. BH Ducati is going to order a new clutch slave under warranty and hopefully that will fit it......Cheers!

Here's an exc. link:
Ducati Clutch Maintenance - Clutch Bleed Flush - YouTube

The clutch on the pani has two nipples, one by the lever and one at the slave.

You don't need to do the part on the first 7 minutes, the bleeding and such starts around 7.15 into the vid. He uses a vacuum bleeder which you don't really need. Hook a clear plastic tube to the nipple, the other end of the tube is stuck in a bottle this is where the old brake fluid goes. old brake fluid will squirt in there as you bleed. To bleed, open the nipple just a bit with the wrench, squeeze the lever all the way, fluid will flow out, BEFORE releasing the lever, close the nipple with the wrench. Repeat this several times, make sure to keep the level up in the reservoir. Start with the nipple by the lever, then move down to the lower nipple on the slave cylinder. Just remember BEFORE you release the lever you have to tighten the nipple, otherwise air will get into the system.

Hope this is a reasonable explanation.

ZVEZ...great and clear explanation. :)

My question is..can I pull out the push-rod on the Panigale the same way as the 848, 1098, 1198 shown in the Video?

Stickying Clutch

yes i has clutch problems on my 2013 tricolore....was riding about 15 miles in the city and all of a sudden the clutch started having a delay in engaging..the lever release seemed to increase before engagement till at one point there was none. Spend about 30 minutes trying to engage it. At some point could not even squeeze the clutch. Finally the bike cooled some and i was able to get home. Bike is still at the dealer.

I've bled mine five times since new. Now at 2500 miles. Has anyone actually solved this issue via replacement of the slave cylinder? I'm game to go aftermarket if we're sure that's where the air is coming from, but every time I've bled my system it's the bleeder at the clutch master that makes a difference, not the one at the slave.

I replaced mine with a CNC 28mm. I noticed the seal on the OE SC was worn and didn't fit well. I never really had too many issues with the clutch. You'll notice it's also built like .... compared to the CNC.

Cant' understand why some are having this problem. I've only bled mine once in 4k miles and it was just precautionary for a track day.

No problems here. Though I have a mityvac and am used to routinely bleeding brakes/clutches on my bikes as standard routine maintenance (every few weeks). Doesn't take but a minute or two and brake fluid is cheap.

i think the standard clutch/brake fluid that they use in the factory in production is not of the highest/race quality/ that the 1199 needs and the slave cylinder and rear brake fluid bottle sit very close to the engine causing the viscosity of the fluid to change and become (thinner) and turn dark. maybe this is the cause of the problem with the clutch pressure? i see this happen on a few new 1199's with less than 1000km. not all 1199 have this problem but it is common

Just bled mine after putting on the DP rearsets and went for a rip. All was well! I did notice that bleeding the slave first did not correct the issue and it was only after I bled the master did the clutch feel normal again. 1900 miles on her now so I'll wait and see if this becomes an issue again...
