Old test - but high praise for the Base suspension. Most street riders aren't going to see much a difference going to the S, and some people (like me) prefer fixed settings anyway
it takes getting used to. Skyhook-type suspensions, that "read" the road and react, like on the BMW HP4 or my Multistrada, feel totally disconnected until you get used to them. They still deliver plenty of feedback, just in a different way.
The semi-active 1299S suspension, which decides what you're doing (braking, accelerating, cornering, etc) and resets the suspension settings optimally for each situation, is honestly pretty nice to have, but it's a luxury. It gets supple when cruising on the highway, and firms up when you need it firm. It's a lot more transparent than the Skyhook system for sure.
But it's not necessary. One can set a fixed suspension to a certain setting, and live with the hard bumps and whatnot in exchange for being ready for hard cornering, or hard braking, etc.
The 1299S can also go fixed, instead of dynamic. instead of counting clicks, it's all menu driven. So again, a luxury rather than a necessity.
