Old test - but high praise for the Base suspension. Most street riders aren't going to see much a difference going to the S, and some people (like me) prefer fixed settings anyway

it takes getting used to. Skyhook-type suspensions, that "read" the road and react, like on the BMW HP4 or my Multistrada, feel totally disconnected until you get used to them. They still deliver plenty of feedback, just in a different way.

The semi-active 1299S suspension, which decides what you're doing (braking, accelerating, cornering, etc) and resets the suspension settings optimally for each situation, is honestly pretty nice to have, but it's a luxury. It gets supple when cruising on the highway, and firms up when you need it firm. It's a lot more transparent than the Skyhook system for sure.

But it's not necessary. One can set a fixed suspension to a certain setting, and live with the hard bumps and whatnot in exchange for being ready for hard cornering, or hard braking, etc.

The 1299S can also go fixed, instead of dynamic. instead of counting clicks, it's all menu driven. So again, a luxury rather than a necessity.

We get it already. Your base is awesome and the rest of us are suckers.

The 1299s suspension has really changed the way I think of street suspension vs track suspension .
It is really hard to put into words how phenomenal this bike handles .
I would have to ride a base and a S back to back to prove it , but to me it feels like this Ohlins suspension is light years above anything I've ever ridden.
I just want to put it on the track to try to get it to misbehave

That's my viewpoint - to each their own

Yes - prefer to set the bike up on the firm side and leave it. When and if race teams go to an "event based" system I'll be a believer. On the fly damping adjustments are a nice luxury but I don't think it's used much in practice

i believe every thing I read on the internet (if its on the internet it must be true) and the more I read on the 1199/1299 panigale forum, the more I read that the R1 is a better track bike....

.....So i must believe it....
