I have 980 miles on my 1199 S ABS and I noticed significant evidence of coolant leaking at the back cylinder head and exhaust area after a ride last Sunday. I took it to the dealer on Tuesday and it's been there ever since. I was told yesterday that they're talking to Italy about this problem. I also had the mirrors come loose after a ride shortly after getting the bike.

Mirrors coming loose is a dealer thing. The coolant leak is a manufacturing issue. However, first models are bound to have some issues, but some of you guys are really having a lot of serious problems. Thank god i'm not one of them. I'm 1200 miles into ownership of my base and the only thing that has happened is I lost my rear brake fluid reservoir cap.

@Rene, I had the same issue today (coolant leak) my dealer decide to keep the bike and he's gonna call italy tomorrow morning to ask them what he have to do to fix this thing!

Bike still at shop

Yeah, it's not a good sign when they "have to call Italy". We'll see how long they keep our bikes!

You know, brainstorming, concept design, prototype testing, cost analysis, manufacturing time - the typical engineering process :D

This type of thing should have been caught when they developed the bike!!! Which makes me think it's something else, perhaps a manufacturing defect.

I'm just saying, they don't seem to be catering to the customer. They'll get it done when they get it done is not the right answer.

The reality is your dealer knows what the problem is and maybe even what caused it. How they go about fixing it so it doesn't happen again is what they probably need to speak to Ducati Italy about. If it's a head gasket chances are they are speaking to Ducati about replacing the engine under warranty?

Idk, when a mystery bolt came out of my oil pan they got back to us pretty fast lol. Insofar as the leak, coolant only exists in so many places on a bike. I get it, they don't want to pay for something they could damage, but a good mechanic would figure it out.

I have never taken my bike back to my dealer for service because their 2 mechanics look like 14 yr olds, I guess there's the 1 Ducati tech. No thanks...

Bad/Good News

Well, just heard back from the dealer today (Saturday). Italy is sending a whole new engine. They anticipate that it will arrive this coming Wednesday. I told the dealer I was hoping to ride out to Laguna Seca on my new Duc to watch the MotoGP. They're going to try to get it in before then...if it arrives in time. We'll see what happens!

Man that sucks :( but I had a feeling that would be the solution. There simply aren't a whole lot of options when there's coolant leaking from the back of the engine. Hope everything works out for you man.

why they have to change the engine? They can not just fix the hole or change the piece where the coolant is leaking from?? Cause its suck you gonna have to do all the breaking process again ( can't go over 6 rpm) cause is gonna be a brand new engine!

I would take the new engine rather than fixing the leak. IMO

If its a head gasket there could be any number of reasons why it failed, none of them good or worth the risk on a new bike. Also, it's probably less costly for Ducati to just replace the engine rather than paying the tech to tare it apart trying the find the problem then putting it all back together?

Well it would certainly fix it for sure, but how much do you think that engine costs? I don't even want to guess. I assume they will send it back and refurb it? Just thought about the fact that has the be the biggest PITA. With the engine supporting everything, that bike is going to be in pieces.

Geeez. I hope your dealer has a good mechanic and attended ducati mechanic sessions in Italy. I doubt his done this before.

I'm sure it will be fine though. Just have to check the bike afterwards for anything that isn't the usual. You've had the bike for a while now so you should feel it if anything is wrong.

Got it back!

Got my bike back from the dealer today 8/1! It was actually ready Saturday, but I had ridden my Gixxer out to see the MotoGP, since the 1199 was out of commission - so I couldn't go pick it up until today. It seems to be fine. They also replaced the right mirror under warranty, so it's all whole again :) Now I've gotta break in this new engine! Glad to have my bike back!
