Definitely preference... I agree JeffD, they are short enough that the bar should touch first. Hoping to keep it rubber side down at JenningsGP, etc... The lever would break if subjected to force perpendicular to travel, but opposite of travel it bends like the ASVs.
As far as people racing, some CCS, WERA, etc use short brake or short clutch... The motogp have the mandatory guards...
If you use 3 fingers braking, yep long is your lever. I use a single finger, but that's the way I brake at the track and control braking to the apex...
