Well the weather in the uk has finally got better and work has decided to not make me work weekends as well. As a result I have finally managed to get out and about. In fact I have had 3 ride and done about 400 miles. Not to bad considering the potholes around here are modelling themselves on the the Grand Canyon. But I digress.

Coming back from the last ride I entered a big roundabout shifted into second from first (I run race shift) and the bike started juddering/cutting on the power. It was so bad the front started feeling very tucky! So with, ironically an Audi right up my arse, beeping his horn and getting generally irate, I pulled the clutch in, picked the bike up a bit and it immediately idled fine. Let the clutch out added some throttle and back to kangarooing again. I shifted back into first and all was fine and carried on no problem. 20 miles later I'm in 5th and shifted to 6th same thing. After some weaselling yesterday it turns out the shift lever from gearbox to rearset despite being all clean is a tad sticky at random intervals! Anyone else had this? Can the standard rearsets be stripped apart and lubed with out any problem especially at the bearing? Or have I missed something else?

Inside the little black box on the shift rod are two micro-switches. The rod is telescopic and spring-loaded so that the switches activate at the far end of each lever movement (up and down). Make sure that the mechanism moves freely. With the engine off, if you slowly depress the gear lever you should be able to see and feel the back of the rod move into or out of the housing and hear a tiny click as the switch activates.

Do you have a Rapid Bike in it? I had that going on also. Had the Rapid Bike reprogrammed and it solved it

Well I had a good look at the rearset/shift linkage on Saturday. I took the rearset apart and found what I believe to be the fault. Basically on the stock rearset the shift lever is held on to the main peg assembly by a big screw. The screw has a fat shank that sits inside a brass bush. There's an o ring either side and a big flat washer between the lever and main body. The o rings were dry and the brass bush despite being sort of self lubricating was bone dry but there was dried gunk inside. This was causing a lot of stiction. I cleaned all parts and lubed everything with some lithium grease. It's now smooth like dolphin. No stuck shift lever.

What razz said about the quickshifter can be a problem too. I also run gp shift, and my shifter was staying in the down position without returning when I would up-shift. Inside the quickshifter is a spring and heavy duty grease. The grease on mine was old and black and sticky and keeping the spring from moving freely. Cleaned it out, put new grease in there, and greased the lever mount/pivot and the shifter has never felt better.

Interesting about the shifter unit itself. If it comes back that'll be the first port of call. So far all is normal
