Engine cutting out - like an unintentional quick shifter engagement. Bad Lean Angle Inertial Tipover Sensor?

I love fuel pump intended as a maintenance part. Ridiculous. I wonder what BS euro regulation caused this. Common problem with the V4's? They also have no sock, or inline filter so probably same deal. JB when you talk to your tuner ask him if he figured out the source of that stuff.

What a joke. Unless I looked it up wrongly, the pump unit a $1,000 part. Are you sh*tting me? Why not just have a fuel filter?

Not an important point, but this is another mechanic who's familiar with Ducati race bikes -- the the same guy who tuned it. (In case anyone cares about this narrative.) But yeah, I'll ask him about the debris' origin. I can only assume that it has something to do with this bike sitting for a while. I did my best to flush and clean out the tank, but I guess it wasn't good enough. But who knows what kind of sh*t it kicked up actually pushing the bike hard, getting it at temp, lean angles, hard braking, etc., once I actually got it on the track.

I mean, I kind of "failed" in missing to clean / replace the fuel filter, but, man, you have to take the pump apart?

And I hate to say it, but I just have this feeling that this clogged up pump and tank is not entirely it. It just "feels" (yeah, yeah, f8ck your feelings), like it's a loose / damaged / pinched electrical connection, to me. We'll see. He's going to run it on the dyno hard and see if he can get it to jam up. My guess it will run fine, and I'll get it on the track and it may happen again.

But I'm enjoying the Yamahas at the moment. P14 at Daytona Twins. Not terrible; not great. I'll get around to the V2 when I do...

Anything that is assembled can be disassembled right. I read the thread SD posted and they seem to be able to be taken apart if you're careful. I just put the bike together but before I take a long trip I'll take it apart and clean it and find a pump mesh bag to fit over the whole thing. I agree what a joke.

I have my tank apart right now. I'll see how much resistance the fuel pump gives. I have no desire to break anything and they are a pretty expensive.

Consider every Ducati since the 1199 likely used the same fuel pump. There isn't a lot of problems attributed to it, but it is kind of a dumb design that I'm sure placed other concerns over longevity.

Good luck getting it apart. I struggled with mine not too damage it so I just bought another one

Yeah, a pro has it now. But good advice. He's going to run it hard on the dyno today and see. But I was only able to recreate the problem when I'm out on the track (heat? Bumps? Lean angle?), so we won't know for sure until I do that. And now that I'm back committed to the Twins Cup & LW bikes, it may be a few weeks until I can get it out there and try. And honestly, I'm quite frankly a bit burnt out on messing with it that. That was long winter building it.

Thanks again for your help -- on all issues.. You give great input.

Oh, and he said it was, "white paint chips and aluminum flakes."

Typical Ducati quality control. Paint and aluminum are probably from installation and normal. Would agree on it being more electrical. If you continue to pursue this project, a new race harness (or known good stock one) is probably your best best in getting rid of all these gremlins

The Ducati guy who cleaned the fuel filter out, then put in on the dyno, "It's still cutting out." Rats.

Sadly, I was right. Again, my intuitions are that it's an electrical issue / loose connection. I told him to check side stand bypass.

The fact that it's happening on the dyno, and not when it's experiencing bumps and/or lean angle adds some data...

Has he figured out which cylinder. When you're running it if it misfiring if you point a IR temp gun at the pipes you can see the colder tube. He should be able to see that cylinder go a little fat (rich) on the widebands momentarily as it misses. Any particular rpm range where this happens or is it randomly everywhere?

Sorry for the late reply on this. I got back 'in love' with the Yamaha Twins and had just been focusing on that.

But I did drop the bike with another local Ducati / race bike mechanic, and he seems to have solved it.

The fuel pump had a bunch of crap in it, though that didn't fix the problem totally. But it could have been a part of it. It for sure wasn't helping anything.

Then he relaced coils, which did the trick. The old ones could have been bad, or I just have just not reinstalled them correctly. He ran it on the dyno, hard, and it no longer is cutting out, but I guess we'll see I get it on the track. Though I may not test it for a few weeks / months, as I'll be all over the country, non-stop, for Twins Cup May and June.
