So I've never had to do this before so I'm looking for some insight on the subject, I have State Farm and love in WA. Now the bike had been looked at by a shop and I have an estimate, the adjuster hasn't looked at the bike yet, hopefully Tuesday. Now my questions: at what point to they declare the bike a total, and what do I have to do with all my after market stuff and what are my options, thanks in advance

At what point so aftermarket parts come into play though?

usually they don't unless you have that built into your policy. I had to learn that the hard way when my R1 was stolen earlier this year. Good luck and keep fighting. I had to fight my nuts off and they ended up having to pay me an extra $900. It wasn't what I was hoping for but every bit helps. I had State Farm as well...

That's kind if what I'm afraid of, my agent keeps telling me that I have the coverage and that if I can prove I have the parts it will add value to the bike and help me out, although I've heard horror stories in the last on companies fighting everything

It all depends on your insurance company.
I wrecked my 2007 S4RS in 2008 and it was totaled due to bent steering tab, scratched fork, termis, tank, frame and rear seat cowl.
Keep in mind that the dealers estimate will replace anything to put the bike back into like new condition.
I bought the bike back from the insurance company for $4,600 on a salvage title and spent less than $500 to make it presentable and rideable. They replaced my helmet and gear as well.

I'd be wary of that. I had receipts of every single part and service I had done on my R1 and initially after their original offer was ridiculous, I came to them with a huge folder of those documents, they raised their offer a measly $160. Ended up having to hire an appraiser (who thankfully appraised my bike for free - since usually the going rate is about $2-300...) and his appraisal (and subsequently State Farm's appraisal) which they had to do since I did one, got me that extra $900 or so. Took 3 months from the day it was stolen to the day I walked into Ducati and rode off on my 1199. Be prepared to fight the long fight. I'm not trying to discourage you, just trying to keep things realistic. Good luck bro.

There is no absolute formula for when they will total any bike, they have a different cutoff for different bikes/vehicles. You can ask them what the cut off is and they will generally tell you. Aftermarket stuff "can" be covered. But remember, they're obligation if totalled is to the value of the bike, and we all know aftermarket stuff really doesn't raise value anywhere close to what they cost. And if they are repairing, their duty is to repair, not to replace your aftermarket stuff, though often they will work with you somewhere in the middle. By the way, State Farm often covers your helmet too.

This is all presuming you are dealing with your own insurance company, which is bound by a policy. This all changes if you are arguing against another person's insurance if they caused an accident. Then they owe you all your damages period, after market or not, gear, anything.

just an fyi . i have the receipts to every single after market part i changed on the bike. i have state farm also and from my understanding if you can prove you had it on the bike it will be insured. (may be a little fight).

here is my question that i still dont have an answer to and i dont mean to hijack this post (sorry kevin maybe you know the answer)

I know a timed track day is not covered and if you are actually racing it is not covered unless you have specific track insurance.

What about the track day where you just riding on the track for fun. no times no race just a curvy paved road with other motorcycles. what is the rule on that anybody know
?

I switched to Foremost because they blatantly answered me: "Yes we cover track days."

Also aftermarket parts are only covered up to your coverage limit. I switched to Foremost and got a better all around deal with $8000 aftermarket coverage.

I had SF, the default parts coverage is $1500.

Is it stated on the a paper? or just his words?

just got off the phone with foremost. full coverage with a 1000 deductible. 3500 aftermarket part coverage and 1500 safety equipemnt coverage (helmets leathers) track day coverage as long as its not the main purpose of your bike.

Ready for this quote. 7000 a year

i pay under 900 for statefarm he said you get what you pay for i was like i can total a bike every 2 years without insurance and get basically new.

Lol ... I guess my quote from them at around $4500 was "cheap" then...
