November '11 it was more like a Cabbage Patch doll - the hotest thing out there, and you couldn't get one!

Yeah, we need some mods...

Hey now, just trying to lighten up the mood around here, looks like you eventualy played into this as well :D

I think more people should lighten up around here, plus, anyone who has seen the sour patch kid commercial im sure understands exactly what im talking about..

Yeah i could envision it exactly. I'm all set to ride and I have a leaky fork seal, sour. It gets fixed under warranty, and I ride all weekend sweet; before my dash turned out to be faulty... Sooouuuuuur!

I keep reading this need for mods. Does the owner not agree?

I owned a couple forums for years that had a lot more users than this one and the mod decision is a sticky one. Personally, I feel that moderation is an art form and requires a blend of tact and impartiality that most forum denizens lack. That being said, we went the mod route simply to enforce what we termed "forum culture". We wanted unrestricted flow of ideas and complete freedom of speech, but once the membership got large (over 10k) we really saw a deterioration of the site content along with a deterioration of many potentially useful threads into a cesspool of personal attacks. We started losing some valuable forum members with a lot of knowledge as a result of it so we knew we had to do something. We defined a loose forum culture and drafted a few mods and charged them with enforcing it. We had some initial disagreements on how heavy handed the moderating needed to be, but once we got that sorted amongst ourselves the forum was a lot better off for it.

I def agree with your view. I was just kind of curious about what the stance/reasoning behind it on this forum by the admin.

From what I have seen, he's definitely against personal attacks, but I think pretty much anything else goes. The only thread I have seen him close was one where the personal attacks/insults got out of control. Maybe it's the libertarian in me, but I think for the most part that a forum should be a self-governing entity. Sometimes it gets way out of control and only then should mods jump in. "That government is best which governs least".

It only gets wierd when someone attacks someone for their opinion. And it iis just bike stuff, not like patriotism, religion, I mean normal stuff that starts wars. It's like the problem with the whole internet, it gives anyone a soapbox in front of a captive audience, that they can preech/complain to. Like I just did - oops

That's my main problem with the internet and reality television. Historically, you generally had to achieve some sort of notoriety, expertise or talent in order to earn the right to say something or have a stance on something that might reach beyond earshot (after all, any ..... can go outside and yell something, right?). However, in the "modern" era, we have created all these platforms that give legions of pontificating nobodies the means to reach global audiences. It really is appalling when you look at how influential people like the Kardashians, Honey Boo Boo, the cast of the Jersey Shore, etc. really are. It really makes you throw up in your mouth a little when you realize that we (the collective we) are the ones that bequeathed this power to them by simply tuning in.

Sorry, I knocked you off your soapbox.. You were saying? :)

Its amazing how a Thread called "Ducati Panigale is like a Sour Patch Kid" can invoke such deep conversation on freedom of speech, forum moderation and reality TV stardom, now thats funny in and of itself..
