Damn guys.. I'm in love with the new bike. I was planning on holding out until the "r" comes out and some of the bugs worked out of a first year bike. Then I see the damn speciale. Sexy as all get out and limited and does come with the akra and all. It's not just the typical tricilor. So now I don't know if I should pounce on this thing or if im gonna be kicking myself for not waiting for an "r".....like I did with my 1199 s i still have.

Both bikes will be stunning in respective aspects. I think the Speciale Paint will be a one off thing, that will be widely copied down the line. The R will be plain looking , but more of a raw race ready bike.
The non electronic Ohlins on R will be easier/better on track.
As a street bike, the Speciale will be plusher and nicer to live with.

From my racing experience, I have learned that unless your at the pointy end of a national race class , either will give same lap times. So to put it plainly, the R won't be faster or better in 99.9% of hands.

But this is an emotional purchase, and only you can choose.
Don't think you'd go wrong either way.

I was planning on getting the Speciale, but one problem here in the UK is the cost of insurance once your bike costs more than £20k.

With the V4 S being £24k, it can be valued at £19,999 for insurance purposes, and will cost me somewhere around £300 with a £600 excess for insurance but with the Speciale costing £35k, it would be too much risk to insure it at a value of £19,999 and as such the quotes I have been getting is around £8k with a £7k excess.

the R will be a very different bike to the speciale as it will be limited to 1000cc and will rev higher.

If it's not a track bike buy the Speciale I think.

I'm personally hoping the R will be very bare bones with the money going into the engine, suspension and wheels.

Jesus! You need to shop around. That or you've a reason they are quoting you so high. No offence intended.

Horses for courses I suppose. I am not convinced the Speciale is worth the money. Trinkets aside, the only worthwhile extra they include is the exhaust. Slap that on an S and get it painted/wrapped to suit and you will still have 226bhp for a lot less outlay and a nigh on identical bike. Come a future sale, put it back to stock and sell the full system separately. Win Win situation.

To be fair, that is what myself and another member of this forum who rides with us is proposing to do, I tend to refine my bikes like yourself Topolino and will be carrying out some of the mods straight away.

Sensible move methinks

I'm of the same mind and plan to do just that.

Well, that and the fact I'm already paying a premium for the S. High import taxes for Euro bikes here means I'm paying almost 40k USD before insurance. I'm guessing the Speciale, if any units manage to find their way here, will be in the 55k price range. I really envy you guys in countries that pay anywhere close to those originally posted srps, haha.

To answer the OP, I'd rather have a V4R than the Speciale, regardless of how they hold value. The Speciale is gorgeous, but I think the R will blow everything else away in terms of performance (while still being a looker, of course), and I put more value in that.

I have received a similar price insurance quote of about £8k with a £4k excess for the Speciale.
Jason is right, for some reason any motorbike in the UK with a declared value of over £20k attracts a ridiculous insurance premium! It's like the UK insurance industry does not want to insure higher value bikes!
(I'm 46 with clean history, no insurance claims in over 14 years!)
This is through a price comparison site, I'm not sure if the same applies through a specialist broker:confused:

Historically new bikes to the market are always over-quoted. As more and more underwriters become involved, you should see the prices come down. You could insure a £45K D16RR for less than that and so much depends on location, usage etc as well as any other mitigating circumstances. You could try one of the specialist brokers such as Adrian Flux or IIRC HR (based in Scotland) who could broker an agreed value policy with you with restrictions such as limited mileage or a higher excess. I have heard of one instance where the individual declared a lower book value and bridged the difference with gap insurance based on replacement value as a separate policy. You are always best off going directly to the broker IMHO.

No, I believe the base, S and Special all share the same engine with the race exhaust being the only difference

Here is the list on the
Speciale - Same standard features as the Panigale V4 S with the exception of;
Carbon fibre front/rear mudguards
Machined-from-solid top yoke with identification number
Alcantara® seat
Dedicated handle grips
Adjustable foot pegs
Carbon fiber heel guard
Carbon fiber cover swinging arm
Racing articulated levers
Brake level protection
Supplied kit with V4 Speciale
Full racing titanium Ducati Performance by Akrapovič exhaust system
Racing screen
Plate holder removal kit
Machined-from solid mirror replacement plugs
Ducati Data Analyser+ GPS (DDA + GPS)
Bike cover
Racing fuel tank cap

Cheers

Not that I will be buying one, but as a non fan of electronic suspension,
buying the base model, exhaust and some nice forks/shock seems to be the way to go money wise.
Especially if you already have spare forged pani wheels or better lying about.
