Duke newcomer seeking insight...

I'd like to preface this by stating as a first time ducati buyer, I'd like some insight for a few reasons...I'm not too familiar with resale values or first year quirks of ducati, amongst other things, hence the post. I'm also greatful for your time and advice. I'm aware of the differences between the 1199S and 1299 Base more or less and don't intend on tracking this bike regularly.

My local dealer has just offered me a 2014 1199S DEMO with 900 miles for $18,500 out the door...taxes tag title included first service already done by them and comes with a full factory warranty. $18,500 OTD seems like a great price for an S, but it is a DEMO...and I'm not sure that the 1299 Base wouldn't be a better deal. 1299 Base is a year newer, and has a good amount of upgrades over the 1199...I can get a Base 1299 around $20,500 OTD.

Interested in hearing your thoughts, and I'm sorry if this thread topic is repetitive, but I assume it's a fairly new quandary I'm presenting.

I have a base 1199 and have no regrets. 1299 base hands down. No work required. Turn the key and smile.

Figured I get more resistance being that 18,500 OTD is around 10,000 off msrp on the 1199S...that and the fact that 1299 is the base model. All coming from the 1199 section. But the base 1299 has great overall upgrades and reviews...

Maybe I'll just flip a coin.

I wouldn't feel comfortable with a demo, I wish I could as I'd save a lot of money. It sounds like you wanted us to say "Go for the S! It's totally better because of the gold forks, LED's, and forged wheels!"

I'd definitely get the 1299, not just because it is new but because of all the new technology. You don't need to be on the track to appreciate it.

I don't know why you think 18,500 is 10,000 off. A year ago I could have bought a 2014 1199S for 24,500... So, you are getting 6k off, not 10.

I ended up getting an 1199 base for ~17k and I love it.

As an FYI...a 2015 base OTD on the gulf side is 21.7K all in.

I was in the exact same place a couple of months ago and chose the newer bike...

I'd get the 1199 S and pocket the extra cash. $19 is a good price for a new S. The 1299 is better, but it seemed like the same bike to me, and nothing better about the 1299, makes the 1199 any worse.

You can change the head angle, or add the R swing arm if you really want to later. I doubt I will. Might be cheaper to get a salvaged R or 1299 for those spare parts. I liked the 1199 head angle better than the 899 head angle anyways.

Meh, I just noticed it's a demo model. $15 tops. Sorry. The Panigale has a tough as nails transmission and bottom end, but i wouldn't risk it. heck if someone just grabbed the throttle too hard, there $300+ to fix right there. This isn't a bike to buy used IMO. And resale value is about the same feeling as giving your credit card to a girl from New Jersey.

You should be able to find NEW '13 1199's all over the place with deep discounts. Keep looking.

25,000 plus tax, tag, title, and prep fees puts a new 1199S around 28,500 OTD, which is 10,000 off. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Obviously no one in the right mind would pay 28,500 out the door for a 2014 1199S demo at this point, but it's still 10,000 off what someone might have paid around a year ago.
